SSC Thought Leaders Dinner 2022

SSC’s Thought Leaders Dinner returned on September 28 following a two-year hiatus with more than 100 SSC supporters and civic leaders in attendance. Keynote Speaker George Dusenbury, from the Trust for Public Land, shared big picture plans for public use along the Chattahoochee River corridor.

SSC Board Chairman, Jack Misiura, presented an update of SSC initiatives including the trail master plan, upcoming construction of the first segment and other greenspace and community engagement efforts. SSC Board Emeritus, Steve Levetan, kept the evening rolling and presented SSC’s Greenspace Champion award to SSC founding board member and former executive director Linda Bain.

Mayor Rusty Paul addressed guests as did Councilman John Paulson, both thanking SSC and supporters for their tireless efforts to promote greenspace preservation and connectivity in the community.

Attendees enjoyed an evening of reconnecting and networking at the City Springs Terrace Meeting Room with a cocktail hour and seated dinner. SSC thanks Presenting Sponsor Northside Hospital and all 2022 sponsors for making the evening possible!

Sandy Springs Trail Master Plan to begin Construction

Construction is expected to begin soon on the first segment to be built of the Sandy Springs Trail Master Plan. Segment 2A includes a trail connecting Morgan Falls Overlook Park to a boardwalk over Orkin Lake with a trail that continues to Roswell Road.

Sandy Springs Conservancy was a driving force in the development of the Sandy Springs Trail Master Plan. The plan outlines a total of 31.4 miles of trails to connect greenspace and parks throughout the city. SSC contributed $25,000 toward the development of the master plan and contributed the $30,000 local match for a recently approved $3M construction grant for Segment 2A.

On September 20, the Sandy Springs City Council approved a $7.8 million bid from GHC Corp. for the construction of Segment 2A. Construction could begin as soon as this month.

Featured Park: Marsh Creek Rain Garden

Marsh Creek Rain Garden is an environmental park that uses plants to filter pollutants from stormwater. The park features a path, benches, fountain, and boardwalk overlook. In addition, the park has an aesthetically pleasing bio-retention pond. The retention pond provides filtration for drainage water and flood control for storm runoff. The park also features educational signs about the project and other “green” activities in the area. The park was created in 2013 thanks to a grant through the Clean Water Act.

The Rain Garden near City Springs has recently become home to five sculptures that were part of the 2022 ArtSS in the Open sculpture competition.

Get your organization involved

in the Sandy Springs community!

Is your neighborhood or organization looking for a service project? Does your business want to get involved in local philanthropy? We are looking for you!

SSC Micro Projects are smaller, volunteer-driven activities focusing on enhancements and improvements in our Sandy Springs parks, trails, or greenspace areas, which improve the utilization and value of green lands for the benefit of the entire community.

For her Eagle Scout project, with help from her fellow Scouts and the Sandy Spring Conservancy, Happy Leveson-Jones of BSA Troop 372 from St James United Methodist Church in Brookhaven planted over 30 native azaleas along the walkway leading to the cottage at Lost Corner Preserve in Sandy Springs. A grant from the Sandy Springs Conservancy's Micro Projects program will cover the cost of the plants and materials used in the project.
