Backyard Exploration Series

This free series consists of four sessions on topics that engage students in explorations at home and school. Each session provides the educator with details on the topic and walks you through the use of PowerPoint ready programs and materials for you to use with your students in the classroom or as self guiding options. Register for all or individual webinars.

While your students are in nap time or hopefully resting, join us in hands on sessions focused on engaging the young child in environmental exploration. Using Getting Little Feet WET we will use water to convey science lessons for the young child. Registration is required and provides you with all three topic or individual sessions.

Participation in the lessons and demonstrations is FREE. To obtain the resource guide you may purchase it through Project WET online store or send a check for $15.00 made out to and mailed to; Kellogg Environmental Center, PO Box 435, Derby, CT. 06418
Climate Change and Connecticut's Forests:
A Webinar for Secondary Education Level
 Friday, November 6, 2020 - 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
This webinar is designed for middle/high school teachers and non-formal educators who want to consider the role of forests in their climate change curriculum. Using nationally recognized, NGSS-aligned activities from Project Learning Tree, as well as local experts and guides, we will learn about current climate issues and how they affect Connecticut forests. We will also discuss the role of forests in mitigating climate change. Teachers will be provided with a free PLT curriculum with hands-on lessons and ideas that will help them teach their students about forests while staying aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. Aquatic WILD & NGSS
Friday, September 18, 2020, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

This webinar includes four Aquatic WILD investigations that that can be done indoors and outside with minimal materials. These hands-on activities will help K-12 students learn about aquatic habitats and develop skills necessary to prepare them for an ever-changing world. Anime & Project WILD
Friday, October 9, 2020, 3:00 pm-3:30 pm

Looking for innovative ways to teach your learners about environmental issues and wildlife while they’re indoors? Use a form of media that students of all ages love—anime! Learn how to use anime and other animated feature films to support at-home learning. This webinar will feature Project WILD activities, such as “Fabled Fauna” and “Interview a Spider”, that are appropriate for grades K-5 and can be modified for higher grade levels Register for Anime & Project WILD webinar.

Participate in free hands on webinars that focus on specific activities to support learning in the classroom. If you have the Project WET resource guide, we encourage you to use the book as we demonstrate the materials and how to apply them for distance and in classroom education. To obtain the resource send a $30.00 check made payable to the Kellogg Environmental Center, PO Box 435 Derby CT. 06418 You do not have to have the guide to participate in the sessions.
Registration is required for individual sessions you wish to attend. Participation in webinars is free.

Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day with a special program presented by Nick Bellantoni, Professor Emeritus, CT State Archaeologist, as he presents his work on the repatriation of Native American remains to their tribes. Suggested for grade levels 5th to adult.

Digital Learning and Education Resources

The purpose of the Discover Outdoor Connecticut iNaturalist Project is to engage every level of naturalist across Connecticut and help residents learn more about the plants and animals that share the land, water, and air with us.  Help the state in counting a variety of wildlife. Educational Lesson Plans and Resources

CARE (Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education) DEEP CARE has gone electronic. Learn about the ways to bring fishing to your students. The CARE program web page has a variety of learn to fish resources available:

Dinosaur State Park offers a virtual tour series and video presentations on exploring their collection of fossils. Using the Family and Youth page you can review a collection of resources available to you and students.
Hammonasset State Park hosts Facebook Live presentations daily from the park and surrounding areas. Archived sessions and new presentations are hosted on the Friends of Hammonasset State Park Facebook page for easy access.

Project WET has a collection of free, downloadable materials and lessons ready for use for distance learning situations. Free materials, posters and booklets are also available through the store. Scroll through to find the language and topic you need. Contact for additional information on materials to aid in classroom education.

Project WILD has materials available for home use and opportunities for workshops. Locate their resources by going to their website.
