The area of Colorado Springs along the three miles of Black Forest Road between Woodmen and Old Ranch roads has experienced considerable growth over the past several years, with continued growth projected. Much of the area, as well as the arterial connections to Black Forest Road (Research Parkway/Marksheffel Road and Briargate Parkway/Stapleton Road) is projected to be developed within the next five to ten years.
As development continues rapidly, the City of Colorado Springs completed a Corridor Widening Study in 2019 for future improvements or widening of Black Forest Road from Woodmen to Old Ranch roads. This study was presented at a February 27 public meeting, and preliminary design for the first segment from Woodmen Road to Research Parkway began shortly after. This first segment became the focus of design as it is currently listed as a Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority A-List project.
Preliminary design continued through the summer and was submitted to the City of Colorado Springs for review in mid-August. This design will be reviewed by the City over the coming weeks before providing feedback to AECOM, the engineering consultant hired to complete the design. Final design will begin in September and continue into 2021. Construction is anticipated to take place in 2021 (weather and resource dependent). A project update enewsletter with final design plans will be distributed as the project team gets closer to construction.
