Selected Titles for July 2021
Several interesting developments this early-summer season! The most sensational has been, once again, the weather: after a record-breaking 101 degrees, we set another record two days later, for the lowest-high temperature, 57 degrees.

I made it to a Saturday day game at Fenway last Saturday, a chance to wear my "Senor Papi" (David Ortiz) T-shirt from daughter Kimberly, on a 70 degree rainless afternoon. The day was so magical that the loss to the Phillies was almost irrelevant.
Many of you may remember the sensational 1920s Sears kit house model in last month's newsletter. There was much interest in this unique architectural artifact and we had three offers to purchase it, one 3,000 miles away. But we found a perfect home for it, for the next 100 years. The owner, Mark Kalin, of Kalin Associates in Newton, Mass., and I decided to give it away, to be a showpiece for the Rosenwald Schools National Historic Park in Chicago. The 5,000 Rosenwald schools were founded by Julius Rosenwald to improve the educational lot of African Americans, most notably in rural America. An early graduate of a Rosenwald school was noted civil rights leader John Lewis. Julius Rosenwald was also chairman of the board of Sears and Roebuck, hence the museum's interest in our model.

We felt the museum campaign represented a perfect home for this model, so I delivered it (!) to the Board president, Dorothy Canter, last week in Bethesda, Maryland: 996 miles of driving in 95 degree heat in a day and a half. I managed to pick up an important library on the return trip, so win-win for everyone.
I wanted to refer you to a wonderful exhibition in New England this summer. The show features Don Gorvett's work, in addition to a beautiful assemblage of oil paintings of American Impressionism, running until September at the Discover Portsmouth Welcome Center in Portsmouth, NH. Link to show here.

This month's newsletter is rather ambitious, with 84 offerings. We wanted to point out a new arrival by our friend the Gages, "The Architecture of America's Stonehenge."

Happy browsing!

Arnott, James A. and John Wilson
[International]. Arnott, James A. and John Wilson. The Petit Trianon Versailles (3 volumes, complete) Illustrated by a series of measured drawings and photographs of the entire building, exterior and interior: including a large selection of the furniture and various details of iron work and brass work, together with a historical account of the palace and descriptive letterpress. London: B. T. Batsford, 1907. First edition. Folio (15" x 20"), pp. 15 (text), illustrated with 97 plates of drawings & photos. Bookplate for artist Carroll Bill is pasted inside the front cover of each volume. Plates LV and LXIX are missing. Plate LXXVI has two copies. The Palace of the Petit Trianon, whose gardens adjoin those of the Grand Trianon, is situated in the park of the Chateau of Versailles. It was built between 1762 and 1768 during Louis XV's reign for Mme de Pompadour, but Louis passed away just six years after it was completed. His son Louis LXV presented it to his wife, Marie Antoinette, upon succeeding the throne. The home has been beautifully restored a few years ago, and can be toured today. This lovely set of portfolios does justice to this magnificent building. (20567)   $225.00

Advertising Mechanical Pencil with Floaty Cinder Block
G. Rappoli, Inc., Medford, MA
[Building Trades]. G. Rappoli, Inc. Advertising Mechanical Pencil with Floaty Cinder Block. Medford, MA: G. Rappoli, Inc., nd, c. 1950. Original edition. Antique mechanical pencil. "G. Rappoli, Inc. Manufacturers of Concrete Blocks and Cinder Blocks 293 Harvard St. Medford, Mass. Tel. EXport 6-3995 & EXport 6-8624" Mechanical pencil. Very Good, but not as a functioning pencil.

This charming pencil has a transparent end cap filled with a yellow liquid that allows a tiny cinder block suspended in the liquid to move back and forth as you rock the pencil. The pencil pulls apart, revealing an eraser hidden inside the barrel. It does not appear to be functional as a pencil, but it's a wonderful piece of advertising history. (20570)   $35.00

The Architecture of America's Stonehenge
Gage, Mary
[Stone]. Gage, Mary. The Architecture of America's Stonehenge. Amesbury: Powwow River Books, 2021. First edition, in 100 copies. Quarto, pp. 336, illustrated with b/w photographs. Oversized Paperback. New.

The main complex of the America's Stonehenge site in New Hampshire is a collection of stone chambers, enclosures, niches, standing stones, carved drains and basins, and astronomical alignments. The archaeological community has largely dismissed this seemly eclectic collection of structures as the work of an eccentric farmer named Jonathan Pattee who built his house on top of the ruins in the 19th century. Other researchers have sought to compare the chambers and astronomical alignments to stone structures from around the world built by other ancient peoples. No one has thought to evaluate the site on its own merits, specifically evaluating its architecture ... until now. This architectural study reveals the site was built in a series of distinct phases each with its own unique style, while at the same time incorporating key concepts and ideas from previous phases. The second part of this book uses primary source materials to reconstruct the history of the Pattee family who owned the hill where the site is found from 1739 through 1863. An absorbing story for those interested in the history and construction of this site. (20556)   $35.00
