Roslyn Public Schools
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

Dear Roslyn Families,

I want to congratulate you all on the successful completion of our first days of school!

Days one and two went very smoothly and I was so pleased with the courteous behavior shown by all our students and their families during arrival and dismissal times. I visited every one of our school buildings and I was so happy to see smiling faces again. Yes, I could tell that you were all smiling behind those masks!

I want to especially thank the seniors for their maturity and grace. These were the last first days of your high school career and you are off to a great start. I wish you a year filled with joy. A big shout out to all the parents too. You played a big role in making our reopening not only possible, but truly successful. Let's continue to do what we need to do both inside and outside of our schools.

Since this is, after all, 2020, there had to be something to challenge us. Our internet went down for a short period on Thursday. This was due to a provider issue and was quickly resolved. We also know that our elementary school dismissal procedures need some tweaking. I want to thank all the young students who offered thoughtful suggestions on making it more streamlined and I want to thank our parents for being so patient. A return to school provides everyone with a fresh, new environment in which to learn, grow, and adapt. Any changes we make going forward will only be to the benefit of our school community.

No matter how well a plan is written, it will only work if the people implementing it are as terrific as our teachers, faculty and staff. I want to thank all of them for bringing their energy, passion and positive energy into our buildings.

In closing, I want to share an exchange that I had with a Harbor Hill third-grader, that for me summed up what first days are all about. When I visited the classroom, I asked if he was having a good day. He replied, "No. I'm having a GREAT day."

Thank you Roslyn! It truly was two GREAT days!
