Alphabet of Gratitude
Greetings!
In September, my 6 year-old granddaughter, Natalya, began Kindergarten in Stillwater. She knew many things including the Alphabet Song from pre-school. But last week when I was visiting my son Vitali, I heard her doing something she hadn’t before. She was not just saying the letters of the Alphabet, but she was making a sound for each of the letters. Ah, Ba, Ca etc. Making the right sounds is actually one of the key skills to decoding the language for reading. When she masters the sounds, she can begin to master pronunciation.

This coming Sunday, you’ll find a little devotional booklet at the doors of the church called Alphabet of Gratitude. In small type you will also read, Alphabet: a set of letters or other characters with which language is written, and Gratitude: appreciative of the benefits received. The booklet is a collection of words, definitions, quotes and scripture passages for a guided practice of gratitude. A is for Abundant, B is for Beauty and C is for Community.

The word gratitude is truly as expansive as our English alphabet. Letters can often make more than one sound, and that’s why we need to practice repeating and decoding the sounds over and over again. We discover that every November as we approach Thanksgiving Day. It is easy for people to say that I am thankful for all the benefits of this past year, but how richer and fuller their expression would be if they sound out their blessings and gifts. This little devotional booklet is certainly not a definitive work on gratitude, but it invites us all to think beyond knowing the letters of the alphabet, and instead learning the sounds for decoding thankfulness and gratitude in our own lives. The booklet also invites us to create our own personal Alphabet of Gratitude.

This booklet has another purpose which is to help us prioritize the importance of friends, faith, family and fellowship in our lives. We often take our greatest blessings for granted. A guided practice of gratitude helps us become truly thankful and grateful.

Blessings and peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Winter Gear Drive Wraps Up
Sunday, November 13th
Please consider donating your gently used or new winter gear to help those less fortunate stay warm this winter. We have a new process in place this year to ensure that we can match the specific needs of the families that Project for Pride in Living is serving. Please remove donation tags from the donation trees (in the back and side entrances) for the items that you are committing to donate. This will help us know what needs are being met and will also serve as a reminder for you of what you have committed to donating. Return the tags along with your donations to the collection bins at both entrances to the Sanctuary. Donations will go to Project for Pride in Living after our drive wraps up on November 13.

All Saints Sunday
Sunday, November 6th
Gabriel Faure’s Requiem
All Saints Sunday, November 6th, is a special time in the church year to remember those we have loved who have become a part of the church triumphant. It is an occasion to reflect on the shining promise of Christ’s everlasting life against the background of nearing winter darkness.
This year the LOTI Church Choir and guest instrumentalists will perform Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Op. 48. Fauré began work on his Requiem in 1887. This was two years after the death of his mother and months after the death of his father. There is a wonderful calm and consolation to this piece. This was not a complete liturgical Requiem. Fauré made a personal selection of texts, laying emphasis on the idea of rest and peace instead of the traditional focus on the day of judgment. This original version was first performed for a funeral in the Church of Madeleine where Fauré’ served as choirmaster, and continued to be used in this abbreviated form for another decade. Five years later, however, he added two final movements for grander occasions.

Interior Journeys
PETERIS VASKS
Castillo Interior for Violin and Cello
ANDRE CAPLET
Conte Fantastique for Piano and String Quartet
BEDRICH SMETANA
String Quartet in E Minor, op. 116
Kenneth Freed, Emily Switzer, Timothy Lovelace, Joanne Opgenorth, Laura Sewell
Guest Artist: Tamala Lacy
For many of us, the pandemic was a journey through uncertainty and pain toward new understanding. Our second concert takes you on three journeys, each finding a unique path through suffering. A journey of faith through seven stages of prayer in Vasks’ Castillo Interior, Meditations on the Writings of Teresa di Avala leads to peace and union with God. By contrast, the journey through seven elaborately decorated rooms of the castle in Caplet’s Conte Fantastique, based on Poe’s The Mask of the Red Death, leads to a terrifying death. Smetana’s autobiographical String Quartet in E Minor leads us through a life well-lived but overshadowed by a curse.
Admission is $25 for individual tickets, or pay as you are able.
Tickets may be purchased in person at the door, or in advance online.
Lake of the Isles Members, children, & students are admitted free of charge.

We look forward to visiting with you at our post-concert receptions!

Remembrance Sunday
Sunday, November 13th
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, to bring to an end the First World War. Our nation has recalled that moment on this day through the decades. And now over 100 years later, we remember lives sacrificed in the service of our country, and those traumatized and injured in battle.
Remembrance Sunday is one of the liturgical services for honoring veterans. It allows for a brief time of music, silence, wreath laying and a call to remember the fallen. Our service will feature the music of trumpeter Ben Alle as well as the men of the LOTI Church Choir and the Norwegian Glee Club.

Valley Grove Tapestries Come to LOTI
Sunday, November 20th
11:00 am
Valley Grove Lutheran Church, outside of Northfield, Minnesota disbanded as a congregation in the early 1970’s, but its iconic placement atop a secluded hill just north of the Big Woods State Park continued to claim a place of people’s imagination. Concerts, weddings and occasional services were held there.
During the pandemic, local weaver, Robbie LaFleur, was commissioned, through Nordic Churches Project, to create a series of four tapestries honoring the two historic church buildings at Valley Grove.
Minnesota filmmaker, Paul Krause, created a documentary for TPT about the history of the Valley Grove Preservation Society and included the development and creation of the tapestries.

On Sunday, November 20th at 11:00 am artist Robbie LaFleur and former LOTI member, Valley Grover and painter, Tom Maakestad, will display the tapestries and an original painting of Valley Grove as the opening of a six-week exhibition at Lake of the Isles.
As an aside, this is where the Haugs have owned cemetery plots since in 1987.
First Sunday of Advent
Sunday, November 27th
The First Sunday in Advent is the Sunday closest to St Andrew's Day, which is traditionally celebrated on November 30th. This First Sunday of Advent marks the start of the liturgical or church year. For centuries, St. Andrew has been regarded as the patron saint of Scotland. Today, it is a day for celebrated Scottish, poetry and culture.  On Sunday, November 27th we will draw the themes of Scottish culture and the First Sunday of Advent together in the festival service for the beginning of the new year. Bagpiper Michael Weiser will return to play our prelude and close the service with trumpets, organ and drums on the tune Highland Cathedral. The Lake String Quartet will accompany the choir in Dietrich Buxtehude’s Rejoice, Earth and Heaven.
