March 2022
Help Us Love Even Those Who Hate Us,
So We Can Change the World
by Ross Brooks, CEO, patient

On March 31, we honor the birth and life of César Chávez, a civil rights and labor movement leader who fought for worker’s rights, fair wages, and medical coverage for all.

Chávez was born on March 31, 1927. He was a migrant farmworker from the age of 10. He became active with the Community Service Organization, which helped fight racial and economic discrimination against Chicano residents.

In the early 1960s, Chávez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association. He focused attention on the plight of migrant farm workers and gained support to have his organization be the first successful farm workers’ union in the United States. He used principles of non-violence, with strikes and boycotts. César Chávez remained president of United Farm Workers of America (AFL-CIO) until his death on April 23, 1993.

Chávez wrote and gave voice to the prayer of the farmworkers’ struggle, which starts with these words:

“Show me the suffering of the most miserable; thus I will know my people’s plight. Free me to pray for others, for you are present in every person. Help me take responsibility for my own life, so that I can be free at last. Grant me courage to serve my neighbor, for in service there is true life.” Read more

Pharmacy Services at Mountain Family
by Jan Jennings, Director of Development

At Mountain Family Health Centers, we seek to control total costs of care for our patients. With the opening of our Pharmacy Program, we can now offer patients who lack health insurance life-saving medications at a very low cost. Thanks to a generous grant from The Colorado Health Foundation, Mountain Family opened its first pharmacy dispensary at our Edwards Integrated Health Center last October. Today, we also provide pharmacy services at our Glenwood Springs and Rifle health center hubs and will open one in Basalt this month.

Matt Percy, co-chief medical officer and site medical director at our Rifle Integrated Health Center tells why the implementation of our new Pharmacy Program is so critical. Read more

Make A Gift To Support Health For All - Without "Seling Dogtoys"
by Jan Jennings, Director of Development

When my seven-year-old daughter Sophia asked me how she could raise money for Mountain Family, I was touched. This is my job, and I never thought she would want to follow in my footsteps. I learned, however, that she really wanted to thank Xavier, one of our medical assistants, for doing such a good job when giving her a vaccine against COVID. Read more

Please take the 2022 Behavioral Health Community Survey
As many of you may remember, Eagle Valley Behavioral Health (EVBH) worked with the Katz Amsterdam Foundation and other mountain resort communities in 2020 to conduct a behavioral health community survey. Eagle County had the highest response rate of the three participating communities and we were able to collect valuable data on the behavioral health status of our community in early 2020.

The goal is to administer this survey every two years to compare changes over time. As such, EVBH is launching this community survey again and we are asking for your support! As a key partner, we are asking that you please complete the survey and share the survey link with your employees, partner organizations, and community members to encourage them to participate as well.

The survey only takes 5-10 minutes to complete and responses are completely anonymous. The survey is available in English and Spanish.

The 2020 survey was completed just before COVID-19 hit, so the results of the 2022 survey will give us unique insights into the impact of the pandemic on our community's behavioral health. The survey will close on April 3rd and data will be available in early May.

Board Member Spotlight
by Sydney Schalit, MFHC Chair-Elect Board Member & Patient

Initially, I became a patient at Mountain Family when I was under-insured, in-between jobs and new to the valley.

I continued as a patient because I always felt respected, heard and helped during my appointments. I also stayed as a patient because I appreciated that the typical waiting room scene included my neighbors, Latinos, elders and newborns alike. They all felt respected, heard and helped, too.

The integrated model served me well especially at the intersection of behavioral and physical health. As we all know, when one slips, so too does the other. Read more

Congratulations Representative Julie McCluskie
CCHN's 2022 Community Health Champion Award Winner
Congratulations to Rep. McCluskie as a recipient of the Colorado Community Health Network (CCHN) 2022 Community Health Champion Award.

Each year, this award is given to two members of the Colorado legislature in recognition of their work to champion legislation that better enables Colorado’s 20 Community Health Centers (CHCs) to provide high quality primary care to one in seven Coloradans. Needless to say, her work on several important issues over the past few years has been critical for CHCs and the patients that they serve.

Congratulations again and thanks to Rep. McCluskie for all of the work she has done and continues to do on behalf of Colorado’s CHCs. Read more

Words to Remember
"A healthy outside starts from the inside."

Congratulations to our Award Winners
Exemplary Care Award Winner: Gail Mizner
“I wanted to recognize Dr. Gail Mizner this month for her swift work with the changing landscape of treatment for COVID. Dr. Mizner as we know takes care of all of our immune compromised rheumatoid patients, and as many of them tested positive I heard several heroic stories of her calling around to all of the different hospitals, always on days where she’s “off” to make sure patients are evaluated and treated ASAP. Dr. Mizner often does the leg work for her patients in acute situations like this on her own as she doesn’t have the same RN MA set ups as the rest of us, and she always gets things done when they count the most. Dr. Mizner no doubt helped save some lives with this latest Omicron surge and her patients, and her colleagues are very grateful to have her.” Read more

Mariposa Award Winner: Wendy Gil
“Wendy started as our supervisor in Rifle during some hard times and facing some adversity. Regardless, she jumped in with a positive attitude and learned everything she could to help her team. Her role has evolved over time, and she continues to be very supportive. Wendy is always lending a listening ear and trying to make the day fun! I know I can always go to her with questions, ideas, or problems and she will give me the time needed to address my needs. I am very happy to work alongside Wendy and look forward to collaborating as a team to continue making Rifle such an awesome Clinic!” Read more
