March 2022
Thank You, David
On March 1, David Critchlow will be stepping down as President of Senior Community Connections, formerly DVN.

David is one of the “founding fathers” of DVN. After reading about DVN in a local paper in 2015, he contacted MaryAnne Hammond, the group’s organizer, to learn more about DVN’s purpose, goals, and history. One of David’s plans as a recent retiree was to further develop “KnowHowNC” that he designed and promoted as a “free decision support, personal advocacy program … that helps older adults live life on their own terms by knowing what they don’t know.” He had given much thought and energy to the development of this amazing resource that he made available to older adults in the community.

He immediately saw the similarities between his mission and DVN’s mission to serve older adults. David was enthusiastic about joining the effort and he soon became an important contributor to the fledgling group of DVN founders: MaryAnne Hammond, Bill McCoy, Luke Charde, & Pam Brunell. Starting a functional non-profit organization takes dedication and tenacity on the part of leaders. David’s strength was his dedication to the idea of assisting older adults to have full and satisfying life experiences combined with his business acumen as a retired corporate executive.

With David’s help and advocacy, DVN flourished and grew into a valued community resource. David is a dynamic leader with a big heart, and founders were fortunate to have discovered him early in the process of building DVN. In 2018, he became president of the organization. Under his leadership, he recruited an extremely competent, dedicated Board of Directors and shepherded the organization through a strategic growth process. At his urging, the organization renamed itself Senior Community Connections, which facilitated extending our services into surrounding towns and expanding our membership. He headed fundraising efforts and kept a sharp eye on our finances, with a view to becoming a permanently sustainable organization serving our older adults. And through it all, he generously donated hours of invaluable service to seniors working through financial, medical, insurance, legal and end of life issues.

We are grateful that David will not be going far, and will remain connected with SCC, offering his valuable 1:1 services through KnowHowNC. Thank you David, for your many years of service and dedication to SCC.

We invite you to recognize David’s service to and love of Senior Community Connections by making a gift to SCC in his honor. No one is more aware of the financial challenges of running a small non-profit or more attuned to the importance of continuing our vital service to our older community members than David Critchlow.

To March
by Emily Dickinson

Dear March, come in!
How glad I am!
I looked for you before.
Put down your hat —
You must have walked —
How out of breath you are!
Dear March, how are you?
And the rest?
Did you leave Nature well?
Oh, March, come right upstairs with me,
I have so much to tell!
I got your letter, and the birds';
The maples never knew
That you were coming, — I declare,
How red their faces grew!
But, March, forgive me —
And all those hills
You left for me to hue;
There was no purple suitable,
You took it all with you.
Who knocks? That April!
Lock the door!
I will not be pursued!
He stayed away a year, to call
When I am occupied.
But trifles look so trivial
As soon as you have come,
That blame is just as dear as praise
And praise as mere as blame.
