LFV Members
Let us know as soon as possible when you need services, so we have time to make a volunteer match! A week's notice is just right. Although less than 72 hours notice is difficult to fill, we always try to find a match! LFV re-started transportation services to medical appointments in August, and require all Members and Volunteers who want to receive or provide in-person services to sign the Safety Protocols. Call or email the office to get a copy.
Are you Zooming yet? It's a great way to stay connected and enjoy LFV's large number of zoom events while we cannot be out and about. Over 1,600 people have zoomed into our events since April! Let us know if you need help to become a zoom-in pro.

A Note from LFV Members Carol & Ed
When I first joined the Little Falls Village as a founding member, I knew that I would be in Florida for months at a time. But I wanted to support a good cause. My partner, Ed Ericson, grew up in Dunedin, Florida, so it was natural that we escape winter to his home here. I never intended to spend summer months in his hot, humid, state, but got trapped by the virus! There are many things to love about this part of the world, especially a climate that allowed us to have a winter garden (see below) to eat from. We enjoyed this hobby for over 20 years, but age finally caught up with us.
|
We are grateful for the wide variety of programs the Village provides, and when we are back home the wonderful volunteers who take us to appointments, read to Ed who has become legally blind, or visited me when I was in rehab with a broken leg. We especially enjoy access to Village programs through Zoom, which we also use to access exercise programs and family visits. The world has dramatically changed since we decided to embark on this split life, making it easier to age in place wherever you are.

2020 Presidential Election
November 3, 2020. Large Voting Centers will replace normal polling places & will be open from 7 am until 8 p.m.
Voter Registration Status - If you have moved since the last time you voted, have not voted in a very long time, or have never voted in Maryland, visit MD Election Info or call the Board of Elections (240-777-8500) to check & update your voter registration status and address. Oct. 13th is deadline to register in MD.
Mail-in Ballots - If you did not receive an application in the mail, you can request one up until October 20: Mail-in Ballot Request. However, before doing so, you should make sure your voter information is correct. See above to do that. Ballots will be mailed to those who have requested them. Officials recommend you return your ballot in the mail as soon as possible or by October 27 at the latest. Postage is prepaid. It is critical to sign your name to the oath and date your signature on the back of the return voted ballot envelope. Sign only the envelope; do not sign the ballot. Use a black or blue ink pen. Information about how to vote by mail and fill out the ballot application that will arrive in your mailbox can be found on the Maryland State Board of Elections website. If you have not received your ballot application, you can submit a ballot request there as well, or call 1-800-222- 8683.
If you request a mail-in ballot and later decide that you want to vote in person, you must vote a “provisional ballot” as the BOE will be expecting you to vote by mail. Provisional ballots are not counted until a week after the election.
Drop box option: You can also deliver your sealed ballot to a monitored and secured Drop Box to ensure your vote is counted. Boxes will be available by September 28-30 at Walt Whitman HS and the Jane Lawton Recreation Center in Chevy Chase. Boxes will be available at the Friendship Heights Village Center and BCC HS in mid-October. Voters can use any Montgomery County Drop Box. They will be available to voters until the polls close at 8 p.m. on November 3. For more information, contact Montgomery County Board of Elections (240) 777-8500) or go to their very helpful website, www.777vote.org.
If you are a Member needing assistance in completing a mail-in ballot request, please call the office.

Wednesday 10/14: "Keys to the White House" with Allan Lichtman, Distinguished Professor of History, American University.
Dr. Lichtman, author of The Thirteen Keys to the White House, has correctly foreseen who would win presidential races since 1984. (He also predicted in another book that Trump would be impeached.) His calculations are based on a system of thirteen factors, deemed true or false, that assess how well the incumbent has done during his term in office and includes the economy, incumbency, social unrest and scandals, as well as the candidates' personal charisma. If fewer than five of the keys are false, the incumbent wins the presidency. Polling data, debates, campaigning, etc. have no role in these factors. Lichtman created "The Keys to the White House Model" with Russian seismologist Vladimir Keilis-Borok in 1981 using pattern recognition. This event is in collaboration with the COFFE - Council of Former Federal Executives and Associates.) (ALL)

Thursday 11/12: “The Birth of Rationality and the Roots of Our Civilization” with Pierre Larroque. Stressed out by the craziness of our world? Come rediscover rationality with those who invented it! At the origins, women and men counted basically for trading stuff. Events and “the order of things” was derived from godly or royal/tyrannical edicts. Starting in about 570 BC, the Greeks questioned “the principles and reasons for all things divine and human”. This led to the birth of rational argumentation – the concept of proof and demonstrable truth – in human enquiries. A few intellectual giants - Pythagoras, Plato, Euclid, Archimedes, Apollonius – developed logic and the use of reason as the bases for our civilization’s advances. Their construction of mathematics, and thus of logic and philosophy, still underpins our societies (ALL).

Thursday 12/10: “How We Have Understood the Universe” with Pierre Larroque. Confused by the state of the world today? Wondering how it all came to this? Come and discover the Universe with those who explained it! From the origins, women and men have looked at the night sky and wondered about it all. Pierre Larroque will lead you through this extraordinary journey of discoveries, culminating with how certain we are of how the Universe was created in a Big Bang 13.79 billion years ago, and why it is today as we live it.

Thursday 12/17: "Edison, Einstein, Ellington, Ernst: The Many Faces of Genius" with Michael Geselowitz, PhD. Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Duke Ellington, and Max Ernst have all been described as creative geniuses. Yet, one was an engineer, one was a scientist, one was a musical composer and one was a visual artist. This lecture will explore the meaning of creativity and genius by looking at the lives and work of four giants and others who have been given the title genius. Are invention, scientific discovery, and artistic production essentially the same human endeavor? What are the similarities and differences? If they are distinct activities, can the concept of genius somehow link them together, or is genius another idea that has different meanings in different contexts? Tune in to find out (ALL).
