The Continued Challenge of COVID-19
Greetings!

As we trek through our 4th month of COVID 2020, I hope you and your family are staying well and practicing proven measures to limit your risk of contracting the virus. I know many want to get out and be "normal" again, but vigilance and caution should be the norm this week as we have seen an uptick of new cases in Collin and Denton counties . Thankfully, prevalence of positive cases in the two counties is still quite low compared to the larger population, and the fatality rate is not climbing. Our hospitals, ICU beds and doctors have capacity to care for an influx of patients if needed.

As more North Texans have gathered together this past month, I anticipated an uptick in cases mid-June. Frisco reported 40 new cases last week , which is our most active week yet. Many are young, healthy people likely to recover quickly. But, the virus will spread as we return to restaurants, gyms, shops, offices, sports and gatherings. Please be especially careful if you are over the age of 65, diabetic, obese or suffer other chronic conditions associated with higher risk. Safeguards are worth repeating:

  1. Wash your hands frequently and do not touch your face.
  2. Practice physical distancing as best you can.
  3. Isolate if you are sick and demand anyone around you do the same.
  4. Avoid large gatherings, unnecessary travel, and public touchpoints
  5. Wear a mask when out in public and especially in confined spaces
  6. Stay as healthy as possible and build your own immune system

I look forward to continuing to care for each of you through this uncertain COVID chapter of life. Never hesitate to call the office -- come in or request televisit -- to keep you healthy. Now more than ever, optimizing your best health is so important. As always, call me if you need me.

In Good Health,
Dr. Lowery

MEDICAL CARE CONTINUES
Please feel comfortable coming in for regular appointments. Exams, blood work and follow-ups are important. If symptomatic, I will meet you outside for COVID-19 nasal swab (48 hour result.) We also have rapid antibody finger-prick tests (10 min result) or blood-draw (48 hour result) to check for past infection and immunity. All of our tests are vetted, valid and reliable.
TEXAS CASES UP, DEATHS DOWN
Texas Medical Association provides answers on the latests COVID-19 statistics for our state. Since March, we have learned much about how to best treat COVID-19 patients, and the lower mortality rate reflects those new treatments and protocols.
VACCINE UPDATE
The world is racing to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. It is important to note that "waiting for a vaccine" just isn't a feasible approach to living life. Even if a vaccine becomes available within one year, not everyone will have access to it right away. And not everyone will choose to receive it anyway.
I encourage all my patients to figure out NOW how to live their best lives within their personal parameters for this pandemic.
AFTER-HOURS TESTING
While we have plenty of COVID-19 tests for our members, we understand some may seek after-hours testing recommendations for themselves or loved ones. CVS.com has an online form for a local CVS MinuteClinic testing appointment. Patients self-swab in their vehicles, then results are provided within 72 hours. Legacy ER Urgent Care and Signature Care ER also offer COVID-19 PCR-swabs to test for active infection.
All three accept self-pay and insurance.
IMMUNITY WEBINAR
This Friday June 26th at Noon, a local dietician is hosting a free 30 minute webinar debunking some immunity myths and answering your questions about boosting your own immune system. Try it!
