In Case You Missed the News Last Week - The Christ Church ECW Awarded 3 Scholarships!

This year, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women has awarded scholarships for Higher Education in the 2020-2021 academic year to three deserving young women: Waverly Brown (Christ Church Frederica, SSI) who will attend the College of Coastal Georgia; Ma'Kayla Hulett (St. Athanasius Church, Brunswick), attending Georgia Southern University; and Hannah Martin (Christ Church Frederica, SSI), who will attend Auburn University.

This initiative of the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women and the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation provides a $2,500 scholarship to female high school graduates pursuing degrees through an academic or technical college or university. The students must be active in the Episcopal church, demonstrate academic achievement in their studies to date and live in Glynn or McIntosh County.

The Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women was established and funded by many Christ Church women who, for nearly twenty years, have donated to this effort to establish a scholarship program. The fruit of these gifts has now benefited young women with their future educational goals for three years and, we plan, will continue to do so for years to come. In establishing this scholarship, the Episcopal Church Women honor those who came before us.

Our heartfelt congratulations to all three of our 2020 Christ Church ECW scholarship recipients!

School Supplies and Books Needed for Local StudentsSchoolSupplies
The new school year, in whatever form it will take in Glynn County this year, is nearly upon us! There are many families in the area that struggle to provide the needed school supplies for their children. In the past few years, Christ Church has worked with GEM (Glynn Episcopal Ministries) to make sure area students have the materials they need for a successful school year. Your generous donations in previous years have gone to help six area schools! Please see the following list and consider helping our area students by donating these school supplies and leaving them on the Parish House front porch in the coming weeks. If you cannot shop for supplies, donations are most welcome, too. Please write, "School Supplies for GEM' in the memo line of your check.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED

* BACKPACKS!
* Hand Sanitizer
* Disinfecting Wipes
* Paper
* Pencils
* Sharpeners
* Erasers
* 3 ring binders - 1 & 2 inch
* Crayons
* Snacks or breakfast items
* We are also looking for donations of new and gently used books, to give out to some of our young students (particularly ages 3 - 8), to use in our classrooms, or deliver to students who are doing virtual learning.

Can You Iron? We Need Your Help!
Christ Church is providing cloth masks for students at Burroughs Molette to wear when students return to school. Masks will be offered each morning, collected each afternoon, and laundered after use. Fourteen hundred masks were purchased using our Pandemic Outreach fund.  We have also obtained iron-on transfers with the Burroughs Molette logo on them. We're hoping a number of parishioners will volunteer to take a share of the masks and work on them, then return them to the church. If you're willing to help iron the transfers onto some of the masks, we will provide instructions and put together a bundle of masks and transfers.

Please contact the church office and let us know if you can help:  [email protected] . If you'd like to support our Pandemic Outreach fund, you can do so online at  ccfssi.org/give  or by mailing a check to the office with "Pandemic Fund" in the memo line.
Diocesan Face Mask Initiative
It's not just our local children and their families who are in need of face masks. The 8,000 children attending the 22 Episcopal schools in The Dominican Republic could use our help, too. School resumes in August, and the government is insisting that all children wear a mask. We can help Bishop Moises Quezada, the Diocese of the Dominican Republic and these children by making and collecting new masks for them. The most efficient way to ship them is to send them to the Dominican Development Group, C/O  St.  Mark's Episcopal Church, 13312 Cain Rd., Tampa FL, 33625, phone: (814-400-2722.)

Haydee and Jim Toedtman of St. Peter's in Savannah, help coordinate our diocese mission initiative in the Dominican Republic. Haydee is shown greeting students at Colegio San Pedro y San Pablo just outside of Santo Domingo during an exploration visit last fall. Any questions can be directed to Jim Toedtman by email ([email protected]) or cell phone - 703-967-0652.
The Backpack Buddies Are Breaking Records!

The Backpack Buddies continue to blaze through the hot summer months, packing a record amount of weekend food bags for the children and teens of Glynn County. Next week, they will reach a new level when they hit the 15,000 mark for bags packed! Congratulations, Buddies!!

We thank everyone involved, from the folks who pick up the food, the food prep crew, the dedicated packers, the delivery crew, to those who support this mission through food donations, monetary gifts, and prayers! We couldn't do it without each and every one of you!!

This week, we're pretty well set with foods for packing, but encourage you to look at the list of school supplies that are needed for our young friends, who will be heading back to school soon. Also, our friends at the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry, in Brunswick, are still in need of a few items for the folks who are served there. This week's wish list for St. Athanasius includes:

* Full-Sized Cereal Boxes
* Canned Vegetables
* Canned Corn
* Diced Tomatoes
* Canned Fruit
* And, as always, Paper and Plastic Grocery Bags

We are alway grateful for your help with the Backpack Buddies mission! If you have any items you'd like to donate this week, they may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House.

If you would like to help the Backpack Buddies ministry with a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated. You can donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies) or give online HERE (choose Backpack Program) . For more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
