Online tours, demonstrations bring Revolutionary NJ to your screen
Sharing New Jersey's Revolutionary heritage may pose a challenge during pandemic, but some of our sites are drawing on 21st century technology to bring their stories to the public.
From the role of drummers in the Revolution to the craftspeople who made the shoes they wear on their feet, historical interpreters at Old Barracks Museum bring 18th century life to your screen through their
Facebook Live series. These interactive sessions give viewers the chance to ask questions in real time as interpreters offer an inside look at the Revolutionary-era experiences of soldiers, crafts- and tradespeople and women, just to name a few. Follow their
Facebook,
Twitter or
Instagram for the next session.
Historic New Bridge Landing is just one of a dozen historic sites to be featured on America's Summer Road Trip on Saturday, August 1 at 9:00 a.m. Sign up to hear how the site served as a battleground, fort, encampment ground, military headquarters, and intelligence-gathering post, as members of the Bergen County Historical Society lead a tour.

Revolution NJ update highlights planning structure, more
The Summer 2020 update session on plans for Revolution NJ, the state's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, is available for viewing on
YouTube.
The July 15 session included information on the governance structure for Revolution NJ planning, including the Advisory Council that will assure that programs and activities align with the commemoration's goals and interpretive framework.
NJHC board chair Maxine Lurie, PhD presented an insightful discussion on Exploring the American Revolution in New Jersey and Encountering the Unexpected, examples of fighting Quakers, surprising Loyalists who returned, and the costs of being a Patriot.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the next virtual update session, scheduled to be held October 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., via Zoom.

"Linger Longer" session highlights ways to extend visitor experiences
Heritage tourism affords New Jersey a great opportunity to advance economic revitalization post COVID-19, but only if sites are ready to host visitors with compelling and valued experiences.
"Creating a 'Linger Longer' Experience," Crossroads' July 29 virtual Professional Development workshop, offered practical tools and tips for engaging historic site visitors, with a goal of encouraging travelers to stay in our communities longer and share positive reviews of their experiences on Trip Advisor and other online review sites. Featured speakers included Jeff Vasser, executive director of the NJ Division of Travel & Tourism; heritage tourism expert Cheryl Hargrove; and Mark Nonestied, division head of Middlesex County Division of Historic Sites and History Services.
Visit our website for more information, including a video replay and resources to help prepare your site to offer Linger Longer experiences.
This program was proudly supported by a grant from Roma Bank Community Foundation.
