Build advocacy skills, engage in community-based research, and explore Cleveland through an internship with
CSSA's 2020 Summer in the City Program!
The deadline to apply for the 2020 Summer in the City Internship has been extended to this Thursday, February 6th!
The Summer in the City Internship opportunities cover the topics of homelessness, advocacy, service, solidarity and social change. Nine internships will enable qualified students to explore the systems and structures behind many of the current social issues of our times.
This ten-week, full-time, immersive experience
will place students with a community organization in Cleveland involved in advocacy work to address these social issues. Students will use their internship experience to prepare a research project for the organization that promotes social change.
Interns also receive a stipend for their work. Internships are open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

Writer, editor, and former attorney April Reign examines the far-reaching impact of her viral hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite. With the number of content platforms skyrocketing, the inclusion of people of color and marginalized communities remains an urgent need – both in front of and behind the camera.

At which service sites / community partners have you served or been a student liaison?
I have served at St. Francis School, St. Thomas Aquinas School, and St. Martin do Porres High School.
"Over the past year and a half, I have been fortunate enough to serve eighth grade students at St. Francis and St. Thomas Aquinas schools through the Youth for Justice program in CSSA. This program encourages eighth graders to find a social justice issue they see in their community, research it, and find a way to address it through action. Working with students on these projects has opened my eyes to all the work that is yet to be done. Being a college student, it's so easy to let all your worries center around yourself: how will I handle my class load, what do I want to do with my life, and so many other worries about who you are and who you will become. However, as I work with these eighth graders and talk with them about deep rooted issues of injustice, I see beyond all of my own worries. I see young men and women who see injustice all around them every day, and are finally getting the opportunity to do something about it. They are passionately working to make this world a better place, and it shows me the responsibility I have in doing the same. At the end of the year, John Carroll holds a summit for the students to present their findings to a panel of judges. A young woman I had been working with all year stood up in front of an entire group of people with hands shaking, and explained her own personal conviction to address this issue. And as I watched this brave eighth grader speak as authentically as I have ever seen, a deep sense of pride came across me. And after pride, came my own feelings of conviction to continue this work for as long as I can. We all have a responsibility to make this world a better place, and that is exactly what these students in Youth for Justice have shown me."
