Gifts to Always Forward Capital Campaign Continue to Increase Effort
We are continuing to encourage more donors to invest in the Always Forward, The Campaign for Junipero Serra High School and since its public launch on October 20, the campaign has raised more than $1 million, bringing the total to more than $28.4 million. An incredible planned gift by one donor brings us closer to our campaign goal of $38 million, Serra’s most ambitious fundraising goal ever.

“There is so much excitement around the official public launch of the campaign and the progress that has been made on the Stinson Center for Learning and Innovation. We continue to see new members of the community step forward to support this campaign in unique ways,” said Chief Advancement Officer Mike Fadelli ‘88. “A great example of how supporters can invest is through planned giving, which is where our most recent gift came from.”

While the campaign continues to progress, so does construction on the Stinson Center. Walls have been constructed, floors tiled and final structural enhancements are being completed. The space is beginning to take shape and the $17 million project is on time and on budget, and scheduled to open its airy floor plan in March 2023.
Profiles in Giving: Michael Verdone, Serra Class of 1972
Michael Verdone ‘72 believes that the transformational four years as a high school student at Serra secured his successful future as a real estate agent. Now, the generous benefactor is helping to secure the future of Serra. Verdone has graciously offered a large planned gift to Serra, a gift bequeathed through his estate by naming Serra as a beneficiary.

“I have chosen to leave a large gift to Serra,” Verdone shared. ”I am grateful for my education and want to thank Serra for making me the man I am today. This is my way of helping other kids who are on a path to becoming good, decent men in today’s society.”

Verdone’s gift will be added to the Always Forward Capital Campaign.

“This creative planned gift will undoubtedly help Serra continue its mission to educate the young men who come to Serra in search of a well-balanced, moral-minded, rigorously academic, faith-based education,” said Serra Chief Advancement Officer Mike Fadelli ‘88. “We are so grateful to Michael for stepping up and showing other alumni that this type of investment in Serra is so beneficial to preserving the traditions at Serra while improving our campus and curriculum.”

Verdone has always supported Serra. He said he is the man he is today due to the life lessons he learned as an adolescent. He sent his son, also Michael Verdone ‘06, to Serra. The younger Verdone is Serra’s current Crew coach.

“I have always been impressed by the personal attention I received as a student at Serra and then as a parent—it was amazing to see that the same values are still in place today,” Verdone said. “When we had parent-teacher conferences, they knew everything about my son, Michael—even where he sat! The teachers are so immersed in your son’s life, and that helps the student become a better student.”

The tight-knit Serra community added to Verdone’s experience as a student and as an alumnus.

“The people at Serra are so supportive of each other, whether they are athletes or focused on academics or both,” he said. “Everyone is there for the whole spirit.”

Verdone attended Homecoming Weekend in late September and was amazed to see how many people from the Class of ‘72 returned to celebrate his alma mater.

“There’s a lifelong sense of community,” he said. “These people continue to invest in Serra. They come back to events because they realize the value that Serra provides.”

At Serra, Verdone was a solid A-minus student. He also was a member of several clubs that included sports, politics, camera crew, morning homeroom announcements and being an editor for The Friar

Verdone currently resides in Redwood City. He is a successful realtor and the founder of Economic Concepts, a residential real estate company.

Verdone has had a notable career in business and politics. He began his real estate career in 1973. By the end of his first year, he became the number one selling and listing salesperson at his office. Within four years, he earned his broker’s license and founded Verdone Commercial Brokerage, which specialized in income-producing properties and limited partnerships.

Since 1978, Verdone has been active in the San Mateo County Association of Realtors and other community groups including the Redwood City Planning Commission, Redwood City Housing & Human Concerns Committee and the Edgewood Park Neighborhood Association. His dedication to community service began at Serra.

“My time at Serra gave me an opportunity to be a leader,” Verdone noted. “My teachers saw something in me that I didn’t. In turn, it made me want to become a leader in my adult life.”

We are hitting many construction milestones in the Stinson Center for Learning and Innovation and are proud to announce that at this point, the project is on time and on budget. We look forward to opening our doors to our students and entire Serra community in March.

Over the winter break, many projects will be completed with greater efficiency and success while students are off campus.
The administrative and academic wings at Serra High School are nearly fully functional and the faculty and staff room is receiving its finishing touches and should be completely operational just before we break for Christmas.

The walls of the Stinson Center for Learning and Innovation have been sheetrocked and the space is looking more and more complete. We are extremely excited and grateful to our incredible construction and building team, which has worked so hard on this great space.
The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation Board Visits Serra
Members of the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation Board visited Serra in late November to present Serra President Barry Thornton, Ed.D., with a check in the amount of $900,000, the final installment of the $2.9 million that the foundation has awarded to Serra to modernize and renovate its campus. Over the past two decades, the foundation has supported Serra's mission and been instrumental in its efforts to begin many improvement projects.

"We have been giving to Serra for many years now and we have been impressed with Serra's mission and what it has done to execute that mission," said Gellert Foundation Executive Director Jack Fitzpatrick.

The first major gift made by the Gellert Foundation to Serra was in 2001, when Serra was granted $1 million. Since then, the foundation has generously supported Serra with more than $4 million in grants for various campus projects and tuition assistance.

Serra's Always Forward Capital Campaign made the news on Dec. 10 in the San Mateo Daily Journal. The newspaper put together a great article on the Stinson Center for Learning and Innovation and the public launch of the Capital Campaign.
Serra's Case for Support
We believe that there is an opportunity in this moment to assume an even greater, transformational role in our efforts to improve the educational experiences of our young men.

Serra’s motto, Siempre Adelante, Always Forward, provides the name and inspiration for our Capital Campaign designed to take the first step in realizing our renewed strategic vision.

Imagine the many students whose lives have been truly transformed by Junípero Serra High School. Imagine how many more lives are waiting for an opportunity to benefit from our programs. Together, we can energize our educational model, renew our facilities to support our outstanding program and do more to realize unparalleled levels of success in transforming the lives of the Padres.

We invite you to review our case for support. Imagine the difference you can make in partnering with us. Our strength as a school is the strength of our community and a unified commitment to its future.
