Abide These Three
By Eve Turek
And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three;
and the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13, NRSV)

1 Corinthians 13, the Love Chapter, is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible, but I have always been puzzled by its last verse. I’ve read translations that substitute “remain” for abide. I have heard the verse preached two ways -- as an admonition for believers to remain consistent in our faith, our hope, and our love, and as an assurance that faith, hope and love will outlast transient gifts and life experiences.

But why “THESE three?” Why not, for instance, Love, Joy and Peace? After all, these are the first three fruits of the Spirit Paul tells us about in Galatians! Surely joy and peace will last all the way into eternity. Paul counsels his readers in other places to “rejoice always.” He often opens his letters with some version of “grace and peace be to you.” Surely one could argue that joy, or peace, or even grace, be included among the “abiders.”

I got up to photograph the sunrise the other morning. My body is exhausted and I am not sleeping well, but my spirit needed the refreshment of dawn more than my body needed another couple of hours of restless snoozing. My husband is seriously ill, back in the hospital, and my mind and heart have been in limbo between earth and eternity. Watching the rhythm of waves break in dawn light helped me to breathe more deeply and evenly. I made images with normal exposure, but I also slowed my shutter to allow the water’s motion to blur. Finally, I deliberately over-exposed some images so the barest details would show through while all else faded into bright light.

I have photographed from this particular location before. An ocean outfall structure looks like steps extending out into the water. I had named an earlier image Walk by Faith. Looking at my sunrise photos later in the afternoon, and remembering that earlier photograph, I suddenly realized what unites “these three” – faith, hope, and love – is sight, or more precisely, NOT sight.

In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul writes we walk by FAITH, not by sight.
In Romans 8, Paul tells us that we HOPE for what we do not see—and wait for it with patience.

We read in 1 John about LOVING God whom we have not seen.
At last I understood Paul’s reasoning. He had just told us in the prior verse that we see only dimly now, but we will one day see face to face. Here, in this space between earth and eternity, when we don’t yet see, we need faith, we need hope, we need love. These three will remain, like stepping stones, guiding us toward that glorious day when we each walk into full sight.

AESC Hosts Movie Nights!
The Adult Education and Spirituality Committee is hosting “movie nights” in July and August. Movies will begin at 7:00 PM, popcorn and drinks will be served. Movies are likely to be shown in the Choir room.

Thursday, July 29th - "Saving Grace"
A 1986 movie starring Tim Conti as a down-to-earth Cardinal reluctantly elected to be Pope. A nice mixture of pastoral reality and comedy.

Thursday, August 26th - "A Man for All Seasons"
A 1966 classic that won 6 Academy Awards, including “Best Picture,” “Best Director,” and “Best Actor.” England’s Roman Catholic Chancellor, Thomas More (Paul Scofield), gets solicited by Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) to arrange for the dissolution of Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The conflict between country and conscience is not without consequence that all should be able to identify with.

Women’s Spirituality Circle
For thousands of years, in tribes and villages around the world, women have come together in circles to share, to teach, to listen, to learn.
The pulse of these women still beats within us.

Their wisdom flows through time, whispering to us the song of female connection and beauty. We only need to stop long enough and put our ear to our heart to hear the call. (Heather Ash Amara)

The Women’s Spirituality Circle is not exclusive. It is open to any woman interested in exploring her experiences with spirituality. It is open to all women, young or old, married, divorced, widowed or single, straight, lesbian, bisexual or trans, white, black, brown, or green, and of any faith. It is a safe place to share because of the strict confidentiality, continuity and connection of the women.

Circle is not a book club. It is not strictly a social group. It is not a therapy group. It is a place to share. It is a place to tell our stories. It is a place to think and feel and be receptive to the spirit within ourselves and the women in our Circle.

Our meetings are sometimes challenging. The discussions are always insightful. We are supportive of one another. In the turmoil of the past year, we virtually managed to continue, to create community, to access wisdom, and to share insights in our journeys while the world shut down.  We have focused on blessings, LGBTQ issues, family matters, listening, race, mental health, and a myriad of other topics. We have also focused on one another.

The Circle holds open meetings on the first and third Mondays of July and August. The next open meeting is August 2nd. It will start at 4:00pm and end at 5:30pm. This summer we will continue to meet by zoom.  Please contact Nancy Proctor at nancy203@gmail.com for the zoom link. From September through June, the Circle again will meet twice a month and is closed to new members. This closure is so we can foster confidentiality, continuity and connection.

OBX Plastic Bag Recycling Project
Hi, I’m Jo Williams, a member of the Outer Banks Woman’s Club. We are collecting plastic grocery/store bags to be recycled by TREX Company during June-December, 2021.
The bags can be deposited in designated receptacles at the following locations:
  • YMCA (3000 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head)
  • Baum Center (309 Mustian Street, KDH)
  • Joe Lamb Realty (4607 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk)
At the end of the collection period, TREX will recycle the bags into a bench that will be located in the OBX community. All plastic bags need to be clean, dry, and free of food residue. Flattening the bags before placing in receptacle is also helpful. Thank you for your support of our recycling project!
