PW BIBLE STUDY

Wednesday, January 4, 2023

10:30am in Classroom A

Start your New Year with monthly Bible Study as we study Sabbath as a reminder to honor God who honors us by giving us a day each week to reset our pace, our priorities, and our lives.

WINTER SUNDAY STUDIES

begin SUNDAY, January 8,

9:30am in Classroom A

Adult Studies is a Bible Study:

Matthew--chapters 19--28

Timothy 1 & 2, Titus, Philemon & Jude.

Winter quarter will be from Jan 8--April 2, 2023.

The leaders will be Clinton Bailey, Stanley Gates and William Warren.

BOOK CLUB for 2023

Book Club meets  the 2nd Tuesday of each month

at 1:30pm in Classroom A.

(except for January and December)

The next meeting will be Tuesday, January 17, 2023 and will meet one week late (because the 2nd Tuesday is so soon after the Holidays!)

We will start the year with a mystery,

Maisie Dobbs,

by Jacqueline Winspear,

to be led by Jane Rousseau.

This is the first book in a series of novels about English private eye Maise Dobbs, a former maid and nurse on the frontlines of WWI who makes her way in London in the 20s and 30s.

While the Memphis and Germantown libraries have many of the later books in the series, I just noticed they have none of the original book, which is the best one to read first! However, I am providing Jane with my copy and I have purchased 6 additional used ones (only @ $4 each -- no one need pay me) and will bring them to church as soon as they come for in, for whoever needs one. (Others may want to buy one on their own -- they are widely available on-line, used and new.)

HERE ARE THE OTHER BOOKS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2023:

Tuesday, February 14 - As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, led by Ted Pearson

Tuesday, March 14 Journal of a Solitude, by May Sarton, led by Jane Schneider

Tuesday, April 11 The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, the Epidemic that Shaped Our History, by Molly Caldwell Crosby, to be led by Kathrine Getske

May 9 - EITHER A Chief Inspector Armond Gamache mystery, by Louise Penny, led by Cathy Bailey OR West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge, led by Janice Hill

June 13 -- The book we do not read in May will be our book for June (depending on leaders' schedules)

We will take a break in July, and for the second half of the year we will read the following books-- leaders and month to come:

The Library, by Susan Orlean

Ordinary Grace, by William Kent Krueger

Reading Lolita in Tehran, by Azar Nafisi

The Lincoln Highway, by Amor Towles

Poetry - month of December

PULPIT SUPPLY for 2023

Rev. Mary Gale, along with Worship chair, Robin Van Nortwick, have been busy securing pulpit supply for 2023. The schedule is completed through February! We will have some familiar faces in the pulpit and some new ones, too.

It will be important this coming year to have BPC volunteers for each Sunday to serve as Liturgists with our guest ministers. So please consider volunteering for a Sunday and use the information below to sign up!

Johnson Auxiliary Newsletter for November/December

THE VA WANTS YOUR BOOKS!
GENTLY USED BOOKS WANTED!

The VA has a need, a big one, that won’t cost you any money!  We need books!! Books in good condition!  BUT we need to be a bit picky….

No books that smell of cigarette smoke, no books that have been sitting in open boxes in someone’s garage or attic gathering dust and/or bugs.  We need books of many genres, fiction & non-fiction: histories, mysteries, DIY, westerns, biographies, cookbooks, etc. We’ll take some romances, but most of the folks here aren’t big on the Harlequin variety!!

The VA ALSO NEEDS:

We are in desperate need of the following items:

  • T-shirts, sizes M and 2XL
  •  Sleep pants/lounge pants, summer weight, sizes 2XL and 3X
  • Deodorant, men’s

Of course, we always need all sizes of underwear, t-shirts, sleep pants, but we are either out of or down to just a few of the items listed above. And we get requests daily!

Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.

Karen Pilkington will be collecting the books & clothes – bring them to church in bags or boxes and leave them next to the Food Cart and her DAR chapter will see that they get to the VA.
