Blind Skills

CoVE: Community of Vision Educators

April 8th | 2:00pm - 4:00pm | Instructor: Dj Butcher

The Community of Vision Educators (CoVE) Seminars are designed for vision educators who serve students who are blind and visually impaired. Seminars are held monthly to provide professional development or technical assistance to professionals serving students who are blind or visually impaired. The seminars include: Back to School, Trauma Informed, APH, Accessibility, and End of the Year.

MELL Connect & Collaborate

April 29th | 11:30am - 3:00pm | Instructor: Rhonda Hittenberger Ortiz

Come together with your MELL colleagues from across the SW Region to learn from each other and problem-solve. Our FOCUS WILON REFLECTION AND PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR. Bring your lunch and plan to work together in teams to address common challenges and find creative solutions. We will harness our collective brilliance!

Literacy Workshops

Reaching & Teaching Struggling Readers IV: Strengthening Writing

April 5th | 8:30am - 3:00pm | Instructors: Jana Loge, Siera Osei, & Melinda Odom

The transition from decoding to encoding is challenging for many students. This workshop is designed to examine the stages of spelling and writing development and impact that syntax has on reading and writing. Participants will engage in analysis of student writing and techniques that enhance student writing, one sentence at a time. Registration includes breakfast, afternoon snack and parking.

LETRS Vol. 1: Work Recognition

April 11th | 8:30am-3:00pm | Instructor: Jana Loge

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) provides K-5 teachers with the tools and understanding to teach the essential skills needed for literacy. Teachers learn the "science of reading" so they are able to apply research into classroom application no matter the curriculum or program used. The 'blended learning' format of this series includes face-to-face (or virtual) learning through structured models and online tutorials/videos of effective classroom instruction

Applying SoR across Grades and Content Areas: Meaningful Vocabulary across Content Areas

April 11th | 1:00pm - 3:00pm | Instructors: Melinda Odom & Siera Osei

This will be an ongoing session that will encompass Literacy and Literacy strategies ranging from the "why" behind the research to vocabulary strategies in the classroom. Join Melinda and Siera as they talk through the importance of Literacy and how to tackle struggling students. These virtual sessions will be full of discourse and question/answer time. This session we will discuss vocabulary strategies that will strengthen student's knowledge through the content areas. This session will be offered at two times for your convenience.

Phonics 101: Insight on the rules of the English Language

April 19th | 8:30am-3:00pm | Instructor: Siera Osei

According to research, once students learn the rules of phonics, they can decode at least 75% of English words. This one-day workshop is created for teachers in early elementary; grades K-3. We will dive deep into phonics rules and application techniques. After this session, you will be able to understand how to use morphology and word origin during phonics instruction, how to map tricky heart words, when, and how to teach a phonics rule, and resources available when you aren't sure of how a word is decoded. This session will be full of opportunities to engage, reflect and apply your learning. Registration includes breakfast, afternoon snack and parking.

SPED Improvement Workshops

Developing Standards-Based IEPs Linked to DLM Essential Elements

April 13th | 8:30am-2:30pm | Instructor: Megan Menton

This Standards Based IEP training takes the participants through the steps involved in developing a process of planning that improves the development of the IEP and helps the IEP team participants see the importance of connecting instructional goals to the general curriculum and grade-level standards. Emphasis is placed on aligning IEP goals with the Missouri Learning Standards. This training will be "hands on" and teachers must bring copies of IEPs for their students. Emphasis is placed on aligning IEP goals with the DLM Essential Elements.

Differentiated Instruction (DI) - Virtual

April 18th | 12:30pm-3:30pm | Instructor: Megan Menton

Differentiation is an instructional process in which teachers proactively transform instruction, learning activities, and student products to maximize each student's growth and individual success by meeting their learning needs. A zoom link will be sent out to registered participants a few days before the session

Self-Regulation for All - Social Emotional Learning

April 21st | 9:00am-3:00pm | Instructor: Megan Menton

Participants will learn evidence-based instructional practice for embedding intra and interpersonal competencies into course content. These competencies are integral to in-school and postsecondary success.

Components of Effective Literacy

April 26th | 8:30am-3:00pm | Siera Osei, Melinda Odom, Megan Menton

This series is comprised of three* modules anchored in the science of reading. Each module addresses the different elements skilled readers possess as well as the instructional elements necessary to produce success in reading. Research based practices are modeled and examined with participants to provide the opportunity for quality decision making with regard to instruction and use of curriculum. Sessions will dive into 'what works' and provide hands-on application for preventing reading difficulties and intervening effectively to close the gap for struggling students. *DESE is in the process of creating and releasing four more for a total of seven. These should be made available Summer/Fall of 2022.

MTDS: Grow Your Own (GYO) Cohort

April 14th | 9:00am-3:00pm | Instructor: Sandy Humbyrd

These cohorts are designed as active collaborative regional cohorts to connect district GYO program designers/facilitators across the region and to promote resource/information sharing. They support the implementation of GYO teacher recruitment programs in all Missouri school districts and charter schools. Your regional MTDS (mo-mtds.net) Teacher Development Specialist (TDS) will be hosting and facilitating cohort gatherings. Guest speakers and additional learning opportunities will be organized to meet cohort needs. On-going technical assistance and guidance for the DESE Recruitment Grant will be provided by your MTDS TDS.

MLDS SW Region: Sustaining Leaders III Springfield Cohort Session

April 1st | 9:00am-2:00pm | Instructors: Annette Cozort, Kevin Freeman, Toni Bass & Joe Spurlin

Attention Sustaining Leaders III, Springfield Cohort: Our next MLDS session will be held on Friday, April 1st at the Holiday Inn, 2720 North Glenstone (Near I-44). We have moved our meeting to the Holiday Inn to allow for distancing. Please bring a mask with you to the session. This session will focus on Attracting Teaching Talent, Hiring, Elements of Teaching Quality and more!
