Greetings iHEN Colleagues,
Welcome to the new members that have joined us these past few months! We are excited to have you and know that as a member of ACHE and iHEN, you now have access to training and networking opportunities for every stage of your career.
As I type this letter, I look outside and see the changing color of the leaves, I cannot help but feel like summer was just a few weeks ago. Where did the time go?! The changing of the seasons reminds me to let go, be open to doing or trying new things, and refresh and grow what works. Have you considered how your iHEN chapter can help refresh, grow, and develop you? I encourage you to consider volunteering your time on one of our iHEN committees and/or obtaining your FACHE credential. There are many ways that you can develop and grow, and getting more involved in our chapter is just one of them. We would love to hear from you about what we can do to help you grow in our field.
This past quarter we returned to in-person programming for the first time since the pandemic for our signature event – our annual Awards program. We had a good turnout and our members enjoyed seeing each other for the first time in a while. As we wind down the year, we have two programs remaining: A virtual Leading Information Safety program on November 10th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, and an in-person Diversity event in early December, of which the final details are being ironed out and will be advertised to you soon. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events and encourage you to arrive early to network during our in-person events.

One week into the Indiana General Assembly's 2022 Special Session, the Senate passed SB 1 on Saturday, July 30. SB 1 would restrict most abortions in the state of Indiana and would impose criminal penalties on individuals who knowingly or intentionally perform a prohibited abortion. The Indiana House takes up the bill for debate this week. This bill, if enacted into law, will have important legal ramifications for women, health care providers, employers, and others.
The Indiana General Assembly's 2022 Special Session began on July 25, and the Senate's Committee on Rules and Legislative Procedure immediately took up SB 1. Current Indiana state law generally allows for abortions up to 20 weeks postfertilization, with no proof of special circumstances required. After 20 weeks, a woman may seek an abortion only when it is necessary to prevent a substantial permanent impairment of the life or physical health of the pregnant woman.

Indiana Passes Near-Total Abortion Ban
August 2022

Indiana has become the first state after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to pass a nearly total ban on abortion. On Friday, August 5, Governor Eric Holcomb signed Senate Bill 1 ("SB 1"), which bans all abortions in Indiana with narrow exceptions for the life and health of the mother, lethal fetal anomalies, rape, and incest. The new law is effective September 15, 2022. It will have wide-ranging legal effects on women, health care providers, employers, and others.
The Indiana General Assembly went into Special Session on July 25. The Senate immediately took up SB 1 and, within a week, passed the bill by a vote of 26-21. Our August 1 e-alert detailed the bill's progress through the Senate. It can be found here.
