Director’s Note

Dear Senior Center Friends,

Happy New Year! What are you most looking forward to this year?

January was named after the Roman God Janus, known for gateways and for beginnings and endings. Usually January is all about resolutions. We may all want to take a pass on that this year!

We know there are a couple cold isolating months ahead. Please give a call any time. We are always very happy to hear your voice!

Stay Safe,

Carrie

Remembering G. Fox & Co.

Join the Enfield Senior center as the CT. Historical Society presents this informative and entertaining presentation via ZOOM!
On January 15 at 3 pm. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the presentation

Once America’s largest privately-owned department store, G. Fox & Co. operated in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, from 1847 until 1993. A key component of the store’s success was the leadership of the Fox family and its commitment to both customers and employees. By exploring this site, you will get a sense of the company and what it was like to work and shop in the store, as well as a look at the family behind the store. Be sure to visit the section The Collections at the Connecticut Historical Society to find out how you can learn more. You can also share your own memories of the store.

New Year’s Resolutions with Steph

It is now 2021: a new year, and a fresh start. While things won’t be immediately changing, I know we were all very ready for the chapter that was 2020 to close. It is hard to believe how simultaneously slow and fast that this past year went by. It feels like we have both been at a standstill, while also speeding ahead throughout the last 12 months. 2020 was a year of uncertainty, and it really taught us to take a step back realize that we do not have as much control over our lives as we thought we did. This was uncomfortable for us, and many of us faced loss, trauma, change, and fear. We overcame it all, and we learned that while things weren’t great, we still have a lot to be thankful for.

New Year’s resolutions are not something that I usually pay a lot of attention to. I lose my focus quickly, and many times these resolutions stress me out once I feel like I can’t achieve them the way that I wanted. So this year, I am not going to put so much pressure on myself to make big goals. 2020 was stressful enough, and I don’t need to add complicated goals that I may or may not have the emotional energy to work on.

So this year, lets pick some simple resolutions, go one step at a time, and go easy on ourselves! Instead of aiming to lose weight or something complicated, let’s give ourselves the grace and space to just BE. Read a few more books, allow yourself an extra cookie here and there, do something you enjoy without worry! Focus on being happy where you are at right now instead of where you want to be. Be present! This year the progress is going to be slow- we will be healing and rebuilding from the chaos that was 2020. Remind yourself that things take time, and that you are doing the best you can! Take time to reward yourself for your strength this past year, you are doing great!
