As Unitarian Universalists, stewardship of our planet is at the heart of our beliefs and practices. Water symbolizes our connection to each other, to the totality of Life and to our place on the planet (7th Principle). For this worship service, we will welcome Annie Richards, the Chester Riverkeeper, to our pulpit.
Annie spent her childhood along the Chester River, and has since held a lifelong love for the landscape, culture and community of the Chester River and the greater Eastern Shore. As the Chester Riverkeeper with ShoreRivers, she is dedicated to protecting and restoring the river's natural resources. A focus of ShoreRivers is resiliency in the face of climate change, and its intensifying effects on the health of our waterways and watershed communities. Annie will discuss the current effects of climate change, how to prepare for the future — and the importance of hope as we continue this work.

If that pledge form is buried under a pile of papers on your desk, this is the time your Stewardship Committee is hoping you will dig it out, put pen to paper, and mail it in. Precious Metals Event
on Saturday, March 19, 10 am - 3 pm!

You may be wondering how you can help UUCR raise funds from sterling silver, gold, and coins that you are ready to part with. We have secured the services of Dominic Costantino of Greenwich Coins in St. Michaels to appraise your items including sterling silver serving items, broken or incomplete jewelry sets, older coins (1964 or older), old watches, rings ... even gold or silver dental work. The church will receive cash for the full value of the appraised items. We encourage you to bring items that may be questionable and any items that are not accepted will be returned to you. There are flyers on the reception table in the lobby with more information about Greenwich Coins and Dominic welcomes calls.
If you want to donate any items prior to the event or have questions, Gerry Edwards will be at church on March 13. If needed. we can arrange for pickup prior to the event. You can also make an appointment to have them appraised during the event on Saturday, March 19 between 10 am – 3 pm. Please let one of us know if you want to schedule an appointment:

Of course, a new COVID variant may rear its ugly head between now and April 30, in which case our plans will change, but we believe we can at least have an online auction of donated items. New Racial Justice Outreach Collection — As introduced at the church service on March 6.
|
The James Taylor Justice Coalition of Sumner Hall and Minary’s Dream Alliance (MDA) are collaborating to sponsor a civil rights bus tour this summer. The trip will be a six day, five night journey to important civil rights locations in Alabama and Georgia, including: the Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham; the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma; the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery; and the King Center and MLK, Jr. tomb in Atlanta. Two 56-passenger buses have been reserved for this trip. The cost per passenger will be approximately $800, which includes transportation and lodging. We want to offer as many scholarships as possible to youth and families identified by MDA. As space permits, the public will be invited to attend. The money donated for this trip will be used to fund scholarships and to reduce the overall cost of the trip. In addition to the educational and cultural benefit of this trip, a soil sample collected at a May 14 Justice Day ceremony in memory of James Taylor, who was lynched in Chestertown in 1892, will be transported for permanent display at the Legacy Museum.

Explore how self-liberators used nature to forge a path to freedom on the Underground Railroad with the premiere of Rooted Wisdom.
Adkins Arboretum, in partnership with the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center, will commemorate the 200th anniversary of Tubman’s birth with the virtual launch of a guided experience, Rooted Wisdom: Nature’s Role in the Underground Railroad, on Friday, March 11 at 7 pm. The event includes a short documentary film that will premiere via livestream, hosted by the Avalon Foundation and viewable on the project’s website, naturesrole.org. Following the premiere of the 25-minute film, audiences can watch a panel discussion with historians and the filmmakers and participate in a Q&A with the panel.
