Notes from Pastor AJ

Dear Beluvs ...

I am happy to announce that we have hired a LifeSpan Coordinator, Jennifer Simon. Jen is a candidate for UU ministry. Jen has recently successfully completed a ministerial internship at First Unitarian Society of Denver and attained a Master of Divinity degree from Iliff School of Theology.

Jen comes to us with formal education and experience in teaching and learning in an online environment, as well as best practices for technology and adapting curricula to suit an online format. As ministerial intern at First Unitarian, Jen was involved with the initial stages of adapting worship and religious education to online spaces in response to COVID-19 and has experience with collaboration using Google Suite, as well as extensive experience with various online platforms.

Jen identifies as biracial and uses the pronouns they/them being addressed. Their passion is for educating about and addressing white supremacy and other forms of oppression in our UU congregations and the wider world, as Jen says, “so that we can truly live into our theologies of unity and interconnection.” At First Unitarian, Jen worked to encourage the amplification of historically marginalized voices and began the work with the racial justice team in examining aspects of culture and operations to become an anti-racist congregation. Jen is also a teacher of classes on Black UU theology.

We are excited by the opportunity to collaborate with Jen to further the work of the LifeSpan Team at PrairieUU. As a final note you will be seeing Jen “around” over the next few weeks but most of the next month will be getting oriented, introduced and focused specifically on approaching September. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Please remember that I continue to be available for pastoral care, conversations, and connections. I am available to chat, catch up etc. Please continue to schedule appointments, and calls with me. You can schedule a time via my Google Calendar or call/text me at 720-549-0531.

In Service,

From the Committee on Shared Ministry …

Please give a hearty welcome to our new LifeSpan leader, Jen Simon!

The COSM has been hard at work behind the scenes collecting data and information with a vision of looking forward to an even more welcoming and diverse PrairieUU. We are  continuing to develop a plan to integrate the Widening the Circle report to the UUA with an eye on the specific recommendations that have come from the Justice League and others in developing the vision and mission of the congregation.

We have begun to look at our PrairieUU processes and in doing so requested information for the development of a plan for analyzing the music program regarding diversity, and the policy and procedure documents used by the Nominating committee so they can be delivered in a more transparent manner.

I would like to remind you and welcome you! Each Sunday, after service, there is a breakout session for the whole congregation to ask questions and provide feedback to the Board and COSM. Please consider joining this discussion or at our monthly meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month. We WANT to hear your voice and receive your feedback!

In Faith,

From the Board ...

Greetings!  I hope you are keeping cool and are safe and well.  The Board, COSM and the MUUve to Action group of the Justice League have begun monthly meetings to discuss the specific recommendations for Prairie UU based on Widening the Circle of Concern , a UUA document documenting and challenging our practices/actions that are not welcoming to people of color.  On July 28, 2020 we focused on Hospitality and Inclusion.  We will continue this discussion and expand it to other areas such as Living Our Values in the World, Restorations and Reparations and Theology. I invite all members, friends and visitors to join us, next on August 25, at 6:30 pm.  Watch for information in the newsletter and on the Prairie UU Calendar.

Please let me know if there are issues you would like to bring to the Board's attention.  Our next meeting is on August 19, 2020 at 7:00 pm. Members and Friends are invited to attend.  A special time 7:15 pm to 7:30 pm will be open for members to share their ideas and concerns.  If you have a specific agenda item please let me know.

In Covenant,

Vivian LittlefieldPresident

Hi Prairie Family and Friends.  I need your help with the service I am doing for Aug. 9th.  I want to build on our story at Prairie in a fun way.  Please record (video) yourself with your family lip synching to WE ARE FAMILY by Sister Sledge.  The song is saved in the Google drive here.

Playing the song from your phone and recording yourself:

1. Get your phone app ready for video
2. Pull up song from google drive or where you might have it saved; hit play (there is a 4 bar lead in to give you time to get back to video mode)
3. Go back to video mode and hit play

Playing the song from another device such as tablet or computer and recording yourself on your phone:

1. Get your phone app ready for video
2. Start recording on video while you start to play the song from other device

Once complete, please save your video to your personal Google Drive and then share it to Paul E.

You can sing it out loud as well and we will remove the sound when we compile the video.  Sing, dance, have fun!  Love you all!!!

If you have questions about any of this, please text me:   303.619.8536

Thank you!
Susan

Life-Transitions Support Group - NEW
Wednesdays, August 12, 6:30
Contact: Dave L or Fran L.

Do you need someone to talk with, who's gone through a similar life transition? Would you like someone to help guide you to find your own path through a difficult time? Are you going through a divorce? Have you been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or disease? Are you living in an abusive relationship? Have you lost one or more loved ones?

Any of these situations, and many others, can be very difficult to navigate alone. Many have found that getting together with others in the same 'boat,' and telling your stories, can be very healing and helpful. My wife and I have facilitated such support groups in the past. Our own personal histories include having gone through many of these issues. We have been through divorces, survived life-threatening illnesses and diseases, lost loved ones, both young and old, and experienced abusive relationship situations. Our facilitation style is primarily based on listening to people's stories, telling our own stories in similar situations, and using open questions to help you discover your own path through these life transitions.

We will be meeting on the second Wednesday of every month.
