“Building a Legacy”
Rev. Jaimie Dingus
Sunday, 10:45 AM
At our very successful Virtual Service Auction this year, Tim Miller won the opportunity to choose a sermon topic for a Sunday Service. Based on the book, “Shaking the Gates of Hell: A Search for Family and Truth in the Wake of the Civil Rights Revolution” written by John Archibald, we will reflect on our collective responsibility to speak out about the issues that shape our time, and reflect on the ways that both our history and our future legacies, impact the choices we make now.

“New Church Year, New Church Staff”
Dear UUCH,
July 1st welcomed in a new church year. Our new budget year began, our newly elected board members received their first board emails, and we all turn toward the opportunities for growth, connection, and justice surely in store in the coming year! One thing I’m looking forward to in particular, as we move into my second year of ministry, is building a new staff team that will support our mission and expand our reach into the community. This summer, I am focused on finding the church a new Director of Religious Education, Music Director, and Worship Technology Assistant. With each position, I want us to find someone dedicated and collaborative who will enrich our community and work well with the rest of our current staff.
I’m hopeful that with your ties to the community you may know of someone who would be a great fit for one of these positions. Therefore, I wanted to share this reminder with you and these job descriptions. The UUA’s best practices for congregational staffing encourages churches not to hire current members of the congregation for staff positions. Of course, I understand that in some cases, the best candidate is someone within the congregation. But, at this time, I am focusing the search on external candidates.
I am so thrilled about what this new year will bring us, and I appreciate your help in sharing these exciting job opportunities with people in your network!
In Faith and Friendship,
Rev. Jaimie

Board Report
June 2021
The UUCH Board met for its monthly meeting on June 29, 2021. The COVID-19 policy for the Church and the multiplatform tier system was reviewed and revised (see the separate article in this newsletter for COVID-19 Policy Updates). Rev. Jaimie reported that hiring for a new Director of Religious Education, a Music Director, and a Technical Assistant will be a top priority for the summer. Bob Locklear, Treasurer, announced that UUCH has now been approved as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The Board approved the nominations for committee chairs for 2021-2022 and established two new positions. A new role of “Church Historian” was established to gather and maintain historical documents and archives for the Church. A Fellowship Committee was established to create social activities to create stronger bonds among our congregants. The Committee would organize fun activities like book groups, hikes, game nights, quilting groups, dinners, etc.
This was the last formal Board meeting of the 2020-21 church year. The newly elected 2021-22 Board will meet on July 27, 2021.

Important Updates on UUCH COVID-19 Policy
We are all excited that COVID-19 cases are decreasing in our area and that we can begin to gather in person in limited ways. Officially, we are now in the “Yellow” tier of the church’s policy (see this link for the complete tier guidelines). The UUCH Board is constantly monitoring local rates, CDC guidelines, and new scientific information to ensure we are making decisions that keep our church vibrant and safe. Our dynamic policy will require ongoing review and calibration as we move forward.
Two new updates to note:
- Given low levels of testing in our area, “Positivity Rates” are not providing the information we need to regulate safety measures in our policy. Therefore, “Positivity Rate” will be removed as a metric, and our policy will rely on Madison County Case Rates as our primary measure for decisions to move between tiers.
- Given the advice of the CDC, we ask that people who are not vaccinated wear a mask at church functions. Our community is full of folks who are immunocompromised, children under the age of 12, and others who are vulnerable or unable to be vaccinated. We strongly encourage all who are able to do so to get vaccinated. Those who are vaccinated should follow the policy for guidelines on when to wear a mask. There is no greater sign of a beloved community than when each of us does our part to ensure the health and safety of all. Safety is the responsibility of each of us, so please continue to follow safe practices such as handwashing, safe distancing when appropriate, and monitoring your health before attending church events. We look forward to the time, perhaps in September, when we can enter the “Green” tier of our policy and widen our ability to enjoy each other’s company in person. Until then, we hope that you will participate in and enjoy church events to the degree that is comfortable for you.

Singing Activity this Summer at UUCH!
Wednesdays
7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
We’re singing together again! While our regular choir is on summer break, and compliant with the new COVID-19 rules recently passed by our Board, we will have an informal singing activity in person at the church on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, beginning June 30. Tim and Theresa Miller will lead the “summer singers” with guitar and ukulele accompaniment of some of our favorite songs. All ages are welcome! For more information and to help give us an idea of how many singers will be joining us, please email music.committee@uuch.org or call Tim or Theresa.

Little Food Pantry
We need signups!!
Please sign up to fill the LFP. It’s odd, but folks aren’t taking lentils or black beans. The canned black beans are being donated to needy Hispanic families.
If you can’t fill a M, W, F or Sunday spot on the sign up genius, you can always drop food by on T, T or Sat. Thanks for everyone who is lending a helping hand.
