ASCE/SAME Joint MN March Section Meeting

ASCE invites you to the March joint section meeting with the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)! Monte Niemi, owner of First State Tire Recycling/ TDA Manufacturing (Isanti, MN) will present Innovative Applications Using TDA.

First State Tire Recycling manufactures and distributes a product line of recycled, shredded scrap tires called Green Aggregate Fill. This product line consists of 3 size ranges of shredded, recycled tires are also known as tire derived aggregate (TDA). These pieces interlock under compaction, creating a permeable, but durable mat for use in civil engineering projects.

Green Aggregate Fill is a safe and responsible choice to provide environmental, economic and performance solutions in civil engineering projects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calls the use of shredded, recycled tires “viable” and “useful”, recognizing they are a cost-effective option in these projects. Others have noted that Green Aggregate Fill (TDA) is a long-lasting replacement for lightweight fill or conventional aggregate in civil engineering applications.

In this one hour virtual presentation, Monte will discuss current stormwater best practice management tools, problems with current solutions, beneficial properties of TDA, and civil engineering success stories for TDA being utilized as a sustainable option for stormwater, road repair, and bridge abutments.

Speaker Bio

Monte Neimi

Monte Niemi has been a leader for over 40 years in developing markets for TDA (Tire-Derived Aggregate), which has many civil engineering applications. Among many of Mr. Niemi’s accomplishments, Monte received the coveted, Ed Warner, Lifetime Achievement Award from the TIA (Tire Industry Association) for his excellence and best practices within the industry, as well as his leadership during the past 35 years in developing civil engineering markets for the TDA.

Mr. Niemi is a member of the TIA’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) and was responsible for developing the TDA definitions and supporting information found in the EAC Glossary. First State Tire is a corporate partner with the University of Minnesota on research pertaining to the phosphorous removing water cleaning properties of TDA (Tire- Derived Aggregate). Monte has received patents in the mid 1980’s for the use of Tire products in road subgrades. Monte has also applied for several new patents that are in the final review process.

Through Niemi’s leadership and educational efforts, in the use of TDA is spreading throughout the nation assisting in the End-of-Life Tire Problem. He is instrumental in creating the TDA market for civil engineers, formulating TDA material specifications, and working with civil engineers over the years, on various projects leading to construction installation specifications.

His work has helped ASTM committees in creating standards, such as ASTM D6270. In addition, Monte has been a contributing author on more than 10 Technical Installation Manuals, on the application and benefits of using TDA. Presently, more literature and specifications are being produced for the use and installation of TDA as an acceptable aggregate and approved by several DOT’s (Department of Transportation). To date, with thanks to collaborative engineering and agency efforts, testing and approvals; over 1.2 billions of pounds of scrap tire material has been manufactured into TDA. In keeping with and expanding environmentally friendly and sustainable applications that greatly reduce the overall landfill or waste footprint. The future holds a myriad of benefits that TDA will bring to projects and growing beneficial specifications.
