COACHING: WINDOW WITH A VIEW

June 2021
The Pennsylvania Key Coaching Team welcomes you to another edition of Coaching: Window with a View. We invite you to engage and respond to questions posed as well as sharing exciting and insightful resources that facilitate reflection and critical thinking.
Empathy

I recently watched a podcast featuring Dr. Dana Winters from the Fred Rogers Center. You may recognize her name based on her work with Simple Interactions. The topic of the podcast centered around Developing Empathy within Leadership. So if you’re looking to expand this skill within your own leadership or even personal development, I encourage you to check out the full video.

There was a wealth of great information throughout the session, and the part that struck me the most was her comment that the key to empathy is humility. I’m sure if I asked multiple people what humility means to them, they’d all have different definitions. Taking some time to reflect, what does humility mean to you? I’ll share with you Dr. Winters’ description; she refers to humility as being able to see a situation from another’s perspective. Sounds simple, right? If you recall from our Coach Approach days, “simple, but not easy.”

What is it that prevents us from viewing circumstances from another’s point of view? Dr. Winter suggests that the groundwork for building empathy is to get to know each other and listen more than you talk. What becomes possible when we take advantage of the chance to build a relationship with others? Only you know the answer to these questions…I’d love for you to share with me your thoughts and experiences around empathy and humility at barwil@pakeys.org.
