Commentary: Censorship
[This isn't what I expected my 20th newsletter issue would be about, but here we are anyway...]

Comparatively, the only easy thing about being a writer of incest erotica is the writing. The only obstacle there is me. After that, it's a damned slog, from not being able to publish at most retailers (thanks, Smashwords and Streetlib, for being accepting), to trying to promote it, to needing to write behind a pseudonym to keep those who would attack me for it from knowing my real name.

At the same time, I sincerely believe in freedom of expression and continuing to write incest erotica is a small way to fight against prudery and censorship. "Owning the prudes", if you will.

When Tumblr banned most adult content back in late 2018, I quit there and heard about a newer social site that was dedicated to adult content and was welcoming Tumblr refugees, claiming that they were against censorship. I thought it would be perfect for promoting my books and there were already incest-related topics set up that showed they were okay with such content. So, I set up a few topics of my own, including one for incest erotica, and started posting my book promos there.

That site is Sharesome. Here's why I'm not linking to them:

Yesterday, it became clear that their anti-censorship claims back in 2018 are only skin deep, as I discovered (and they have confirmed) that they have started censoring their search results, to block the keyword "incest" from returning any results. Perhaps other keywords as well, I don't know. They haven't banned the incest content outright, but anyone with an ounce of experience with censorship knows that making content harder to find is only a first step toward a ban. Hell, even Facebook doesn't ban incest from its searches, but now Sharesome does?

That's their choice and they're entitled to make it. But I'm also entitled to respond.

So, I've decided to part ways with them. I'm not going to continue promoting a site that doesn't want my incest erotica books there, even though my content is relatively tame compared to the XXX-rated GIFs and videos that are their mainstay.

Of course, I've got the link to my profile there in the back matter of my books, so now I need to remove it and republish, after removing all of my content from their site -- post by post (10000 in 2 years).

And here I wanted to focus on writing this weekend. Instead, I'm dealing with this bullshit and wondering whether what I get out of writing remains worth the fight.
