FSPCA Answers Questions about Human Food Curriculum Updates
The Alliance Work Group tasked with updating the FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Foods (PCHF) curriculum is still on track to meet the year-end 2022 goal for completion of the presentation portion of the curriculum and will continue to work on the manual text and resources. This Work Group is comprised of academia, industry, and government members, with input from FSPCA and FDA. During this year’s Annual Conference, FSPCA received questions regarding its Preventive Controls for Human Food curriculum updates. FSPCA has compiled a list of FAQs to keep FSPCA Human Food Lead Instructors informed on the status of the curriculum updates. You can download the FAQs here.
FSPCA Preventive Controls for Animal Food v1.1 is now available in Spanish
The FSPCA Preventive Controls for Animal Food v1.1 is now available in Spanish from the Animal Food Lead Instructor Resource Portal. Note! Please be patient as the file size is quite big and takes some time to download from the Lead Instructor Portal. A water-marked public version of the Participant Manual is also available on the FSPCA Animal Food webpage.

Reanalysis – A Critical Component of Verification
Reanalysis is a critical component of a company’s Food Safety Plan/HACCP Plan. Reanalysis makes sure that the plan is accurate and applicable, and that it reflects change and improved understanding. Martin Bucknavage and Kathy Gombas, both members of the FSPCA Executive Advisory Board and FSPCA PCHF Lead Instructors, published an article titled Reanalysis – A Critical Component of Verification in the October/November issue of the Food Safety Magazine. 2022 FSPCA Annual Conference a Success
More than 220 participants from 14 countries attended the 2022 FSPCA Annual Conference held virtually October 19-20. Since 2017, the FSPCA Annual Conferences are intended to serve our FSPCA community by sharing the latest developments in the various FSPCA FSMA regulation standardized/core training curricula and activities, providing support to FSPCA Lead Instructors and course participants, fostering an interactive forum for participants to hear from FDA officials on inspection results, as well as from industry leaders on experiences in complying with the FSMA regulations. A pdf version of the presentations approved for sharing by the presenters is available on the FSPCA website.

A personalized Certificate of Attendance was provided to participants who completed the post-conference survey.

FDA FSMA Related Announcements
On December 7, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held an informational webinar about the recently released Food Traceability final rule issued under the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The final rule covers domestic firms, retail food establishments, restaurants, and farms, as well as foreign firms and farms producing food for U.S. consumption. Foods subject to the final rule requirements appear on the Food Traceability List (FTL). The webinar recording and presentation slides for the FSMA Food Traceability Final Rule Webinar are now available.

On November 29, 2022, FDA issued two guidance documents about food allergen labeling requirements to help the food industry meet the requirements to list any major food allergen on the labels of FDA-regulated foods. One of the guidance documents is a draft guidance titled Questions and Answers Regarding Food Allergens, Including the Food Allergen Labeling Requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Edition 5); Guidance for Industry. This draft guidance updates the previous edition (Edition 4), referenced in FSPCA PCHF Participant Manual, with new and revised questions and answers related to the labeling of food allergen. The draft guidance includes:
  • New questions and answers about food allergen labeling requirements, such as the labeling of sesame, milk, and eggs; the labeling of major food allergens in the labeling of dietary supplement products; and other technical labeling issues.
  • Revised questions and answers to update and clarify information presented in earlier editions of the final guidance, such as the labeling of tree nuts, fish, and crustacean shellfish.
  • Images that show examples of labeling requirements.

The agency also issued a final guidance with the same title to preserve the questions and answers from the previous edition (Edition 4) that were not changed, except for editorial changes such as renumbering the questions and reorganizing the information in the guidance.
