COVID-19 HR/Benefits Information:
An update on the CBOPHB extension of the delayed enforcement of the arrearage policy through the end of the year
The Conference Board of Pension and Health Benefits (CBOPHB) has approved an extension of the delayed enforcement of the direct bill arrearage policy through December 31, 2020. If a church is still able to pay their direct bills, they should. If a church experiences financial hardship as a result of reduced giving during this time, the church is asked to notify
District Superintendent Rev. Debbie Earthrowl as well as the
Benefits office (Susan Latessa or Julie Valeski) of their situation. The Upper New York Conference will work on it on a case-by-case basis.

Consider a "Blessing of the Devices"
For many churches, one of the markers of the beginning of the fall program year is the "Blessing of the Backpacks." It is a ritual that helps our faith communities bless children as they return back to school, assures both children and adults that God is with them wherever they go and reminds us, as Martin Luther wrote, that everything inside that backpack can be a means by which we can serve and bless our neighbors.
You may also want to add a "Blessing of the Devices" to your fall rites of passage. Just as we bless the physical symbols and tools of our learning, we can also bless and mark the digital devices through which so much of schooling, work and life are now mediated - or happening remotely from schools and work places.

The Challenging Climate for U.S. Congregations
The average congregation is getting smaller with a median size of around 60 attenders, reports Scott Thumma, director of the Hartford Institute for Religious Research. At the same time, a small percentage of large congregations accounts for around half of weekly worship attendance and increasingly dominates the religious landscape.

COVID-19 Reminds Us of
Crucial Church Finance Safeguards
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought tragedy and hardship to millions of persons throughout the world. Among them are church members who are experiencing grief, financial loss, and pain. In the midst of the tragedy, congregations are facing many kinds of challenges. One is maintaining financial resources for the healing that is critical at this time in history and also for undergirding the witness and mission to which the church is continually called.

Paycheck Protection Program extended
On June 30, 2020, the U.S. Senate passed an extension for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) application process to Aug. 8, 2020. This extension will allow any local church that has not yet applied for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan to do so over the next five weeks. There is still more than $130 billion dollars in available funds remaining in the PPP. Any local church would qualify for a PPP loan as long as they have paid staff that are issued a W-2 at the end of the year. A church can request up to 2.5 times their average monthly salary in a PPP. A church would then have up to 24 weeks to spend the funds on qualifying expenses that would then get forgiven and converted to a grant after completing the appropriate forgiveness forms with your financial institution that issued the PPP loan.
The PPP is a blessing to local churches to help bridge the financial hardship caused from COVID-19. If your local church has seen a decrease in your monthly giving, do not have a large reserve to draw from and are struggling to meet your monthly obligations then, a PPP could help.
Click here for additional information on the PPP program. If you need further assistance on applying for the PPP, please contact Bob Flask, the Conference Treasurer at [email protected]

Local Church Historian School
to be offered in September
Are you, or someone you know, interested in caring for or improving your church's program of history?
The General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church will be offering a Local Church Historian School in 2020 for church historians---or anyone interested in the story of their church.
This is the same school developed and offered by the Indiana Conference in the past---now updated---and being offered by the General Commission on Archives and History to any United Methodist church globally.*
The Local Church Historian School curriculum will cover a wide range of skills necessary to become a "complete" church historian. Participating congregations will benefit from a new consciousness of their heritage and legacy and be motivated to study their unique stories and proclaim it to those around them.
The Book of Discipline says our Conference is "to encourage and assist the local churches in preserving their records, compiling their histories and celebrating their heritage...." This school provides United Methodists the opportunity to do just that.
The school will begin on September, 14, 2020. Plan now to use this opportunity to ensure that the heritage of each of our churches will be celebrated and that each church can receive the full benefit of its own amazing story.
*The only prerequisite for the Local Church Historian School is access to dependable email service. (Minimal computer skills are required.)

Advanced Lay Servant Course
Open to All Laity
DISCIPLE FAST TRACK: Bible Study for Busy Lives
Beginning in August, this 12-week course will be held via ZOOM.
The Bible remains the primary source for faith development for Christians. In the Bible we encounter God, God's story and God's vision for humanity. More importantly, it is through our experience of the Bible that we are encountered by God, our story is shaped by God, and God's vision for us is discerned. Some of us have the personal discipline to read the Bible daily. The rest of us, however, need structure, a sense of accountability and the encouragement of fellow sojourners. If you are one of "the rest of us," please consider Disciple Fast Track!
Disciple Fast Track
helps busy people encounter the Bible in order to grow in faith. Daily readings for private devotion and reflection, as well as materials to help understand the Bible, its content and its development, are provided.
The Conference Lay Servant Ministries Team has approved Disciple Fast Track as an Advanced Lay Servant Ministries Course. The Old Testament portion of the study begins Saturday, August 15 from 9 AM to 10:15 AM for twelve weeks (with the exception of October 3, October 24, and November 14) via Zoom. The cost is $10 with checks payable to UNYAC (Upper New York Annual Conference).
Please purchase Disciple Fast Track: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study Old Testament Study Manual from Cokesbury.
Facilitator: Contact Nancy Goddard at
[email protected]
for a registration form and questions.

Lay Servants as Christian Transformational Leaders

to help us understand, learn, and define the three disciplines of Christian transformational leadership and the four qualities of Christian transformational leaders
. This weekend class begins on Friday November 13 and concludes on Sunday, November 15, at Calvary UMC, 15 Ridge Rd, Latham 12110. All laity are invited to attend. You do not need to be a lay servant to share in this weekend!
|
From the Albany District Lay Ministry Team:
Celebration of Laity Sunday
Although we are in the midst of the CoVID-19 pandemic, and we don't know when churches will be able to reopen fully, please give consideration to talking with your pastor about observing Laity Sunday at a point in time that is convenient for your church, your pastor, and your laity.
Laity Sunday is usually celebrated on the third Sunday of October, but it can be celebrated any time. Methodism, in all its roots, has a long history of celebrating and recognizing the work, ministry, and mission of all laity - not only within the walls of our church but in our everyday lives, as well. It is a day set aside to recognize and affirm the ministry of laity, whether as lay leaders, lay servants, lay speakers, lay ministers, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, Walks to Emmaus, Chrysalis, missionary service as well as ministries in our homes, our places of work, our positions in the community.
THANK YOU - for all the ways you have been, are, and will be God's hands and feet in the world.

Imagine No Racism approved as an
advanced course in Upper New York Conference
Imagine No Racism (INR) has been approved as an advanced course for Upper New York. The curriculum,
which has a deeply spiritual foundation, has been formatted as a 10-hour course including videos, conversations, and experiential learning. An INR facilitator will lead each course.
Each District has at least three trained facilitators who will guide the conversation as the participants experience vital concepts dealing with racism in today's world. The goal of this experience is to develop each lay servant's ability to be an ally who walks with people of color to build relationships and take action for justice.
Look for details to come.
