International Peace Day Meditation
on Zoom with Shubhada Dantale

Monday, September 21 @ 7:00 pm

Please register for this program by sending an email to Cynde Bloom Lahey, Director of Library Information Services, at clahey@norwalkpl.org.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

This year, it has been clearer than ever that we are not each other's enemies. Rather, our common enemy is a tireless virus that threatens our health, security and very way of life. COVID-19 has thrown the world into turmoil and forcibly reminded us that what happens in one part of the planet can impact people everywhere.

Fittingly, the theme for 2020 is "Shaping Peace Together." Celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic. Stand together with the UN against attempts to use the virus to promote discrimination or hatred.

As we struggle to defeat COVID-19, your voice is more important than ever. In these difficult times of physical distancing, this International Day of Peace will be dedicated to fostering dialogue and collecting ideas. The world will be invited to unite and share thoughts on how to weather this storm, heal our planet and change it for the better. Even though we may not be able to stand next to each other, we can still dream together.

Not Your Usual Book Club

The Library Book by Susan Orlean
Sept. 24 @ 3:00 pm Live on Zoom

Please contact Susannah at sviolino@norwalkpl.org to register,
and for information about joining this live program.

Susan Orlean's bestseller and New York Times Notable Book is a dazzling love letter to a beloved institution and an investigation into one of its greatest mysteries. On the morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. The fire was disastrous: it reached two thousand degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library-and if so, who?

"A book lover's dream...an ambitiously researched, elegantly written book that serves as a portal into a place of history, drama, culture, and stories" (Star Tribune, Minneapolis), Susan Orlean's thrilling journey through the stacks reveals how these beloved institutions provide much more than just books-and why they remain an essential part of the heart, mind, and soul of our country.

Susan Orlean has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992. She is the author of seven books, including Rin Tin Tin, Saturday Night, and The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Academy Award-winning film Adaptation. She lives with her family and her animals in upstate New York.

The book is available to Norwalk library cardholders in print, and in ebook and eaudiobook versions on Overdrive.

Resources for Historical Research from the Norwalk History Room!
Compiled by Candi Sterling, Librarian

As we move through the month of September, the Norwalk History Room has continued to dive into pandemic history in Connecticut and beyond! In part II of this month's pandemic series, the first historical resource on this topic comes from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the CDC's pandemic history overview, curious researchers can find an overview of the 1918 influenza complete with a historical photo gallery featuring several American cities, a timeline of the pandemic and an infographic of "pandemic milestones" from 1917 through 2009. Learn more here: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/1918-commemoration/1918-pandemic-history.htm

Now for a resource with a focus closer to home...
Interested in researching how the 1918 pandemic impacted Connecticut specifically?

In Connecticut, the 1918 pandemic created ripple effects throughout the state and made history worldwide as it overlapped in occurrence with World War I. ConnecticutHistory.org is a resource that captures various statistics from that time, while providing additional links to learn about Connecticut history. Discover more here: https://connecticuthistory.org/eighty-five-hundred-souls-the-1918-1919-flu-epidemic-in-connecticut/

Also, the State Department of Health's bulletin from April of 1919 (Connecticut Health Bulletin, vol. 33, no. 4) provides more statistical insights where Norwalk is specifically cited. View the bulletin here: https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/Departments-and-Agencies/DPH/dph/infectious_diseases/flu/pdf/Connecticut-Health-Bulletin-April-1919.pdf

We hope these resources on the 1918 influenza pandemic are helpful for your research endeavors! If you wish to find out more about the Norwalk History Room, please go to our webpage on the NPL website: http://www.norwalkpl.org/162/Norwalk-History-Room
