SCRLC Annual Awards Call For Nominations
To say that this has been an extraordinary year is an understatement. Through it all, you--the directors and staff of SCRLC members--continue to serve and support the nearly one million residents living, working, and going to school in our 14-county, 10,044 square mile region. You nimbly and creatively provide astonishing and innovative programs and services for your community, as well as exceptional customer care-before, throughout "NY on Pause" and here in the "new normal."

Nominating a colleague for an award is one way to express your appreciation for your co-worker's accomplishments, and to brighten their day!

The nomination process is easy. Think of whom you'd like to nominate and complete the nomination form - 2020 Nomination Form (Word) (PDF).

Awards will be presented at SCRLC's Annual Meeting, which will be held virtually on Friday, October 30th.The deadline for receipt of the nomination form is Friday, October 16, 2020, 4:00 PM.

DIRECTOR'S CUP

Cheery Friday Greetings,

I hope this edition of the News finds you well. It has been an eventful two weeks—the pandemic continues, schools open in the "new normal," and the wildfires continue to burn in the West. The slightly dimmed sun is shining through bluish skies, affected by ash high up in the atmosphere.

My youngest daughter, who had been camping in Oregon, made it out just ahead of the road closure in their area. As I write this, people are still missing and there have been a number of fatalities in the western states. A couple of libraries in Oregon have burned. The Oregon Library Association has updated news; the Whitman County Library’s blog contains information on how to help. NPR reported on a library destroyed in eastern Washington this past week. According to an article in the Library Journal, the California libraries have been largely spared at this point. Our thoughts are with the communities and families so tragically affected.

It is an exhausting time for many of us, from continuing to cope with the pandemic and school/workplace reopenings, to worrying about climate change and the upcoming election. Social justice weighs on many of our minds and it can be frustrating when change isn't happening fast enough or there isn't a clear path forward.

Last month, we did a four-part series on How to be an Antiracist. The evaluations were positive, and yet we want to do even better job of engaging with the next book, which will be Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: the Origins of our Discontents. Register Here. A basic question on our minds is how our community moves forward from dialogue and discussion to transformative action.

Whether it is the pandemic, climate change, stress reduction, social justice, or antiracism, our libraries—of all types, as well as our museum and historical society members—link our communities—however defined—with credible and reliable resources on these topics. You bring people together, whether remotely or in-person eventually--to learn, discuss, and share perspectives. You are a very bright light that shines through these challenging times, when it is needed the most!

Yours in partnership,

Mary-Carol Lindbloom
