Merry Christmas
In these last days of Advent, we prepare our hearts, minds, and imaginations for the nativity of our Lord, the gift of Emmanuel, God with us. A sacred and holy time in the lives of all Christians.
One of the traditions I most look forward to every year … putting out the creche. In our family, the tradition of placing the creche and its figures are central to decorating. Then on Christmas morning before we open any presents, we retell the ancient story of what Madeline L’Engel calls ‘the glorious impossible’. The nativity story from Luke’s Gospel, with all the characters; angels and shepherds, Mary and Joseph, and of course the baby Jesus. The most memorable year was when Ned, aged seven, had Jesus ride in on the top of his new remote control, red Ferrari.
It’s just how we do it at our house no matter where we are or what else is happening, we tell the story. In a year when what we do or how we usually do it, isn’t like any other, we still tell the story.
In this year when nothing is the same, the nativity of our Lord may not be either. Yes, the love of God for God’s people is still clear. In the lovely paradox that is our Christian life, God is immutable AND forever changing. This year we have a special invitation to see where we are stuck and where the new life of the nativity can be born anew, or in my case maybe Jesus will arrive on a red Ferrari. How we receive, see, experience the coming of Love, may indeed feel different. And all God’s people say, Amen!
In a year where we have been challenged to examine our hearts on issues of race, class, and privilege, may we see the birth of Christ as wonderfully good news of God's reconciling work with humanity.
As the parish reimagines how church will be and works diligently to bring new leadership to the parish, may we all be encouraged by the gift of the incarnation.
A very special note of gratitude to the staff; Julie Mankin, Susie Coffman, Tiffany Carter, Jane Mendenhall, Michael Sanchez, Aubrey Stevens, Mark Defazio, Kristen Clarke, Don Caldwell, and Paul Sauer and your vestry; Richard Genéce, Angel Bigger, Patrick Flanagan, Kim French, Steve Whittaker, Pack Phillips, Julia Simpson, Vivianna Steward, Lean Wessenberg, Raj Isreal, Meg Knopf, and Jason Burns for their continued hard and good work this past year. They are an amazing bunch of folks using their gifts for ongoing good, even in the most challenging times! And the work of every volunteer in pastoral care, outreach, fellowship, buildings and grounds, worship, and formation for their gracious commitment to reimagining the programs and ministry of Christ Church Parish. Such a joy and privilege to work with each of you!
A reminder that the services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are found on the parish website. Please do Come to the Table following each service time to safely receive the sacrament.
Love to you and yours this Nativity.
Peace
