Work Begins on Linking Terry Hershey Trail to Deerwood

 
A project to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists to Terry Hershey Trail is underway.  A 6-foot wide, enhanced sidewalk, plus a dedicated, protected two-way bike lane is being built on the north side of Deerwood Drive between Riverview and the southbound Beltway 8 frontage road (just outside the Walnut Bend neighborhood.)  The Deerwood entrance to the neighborhood is closed for construction and will remain so for six to eight weeks. Once the pathway is complete, cyclists and pedestrians will have a route to connect with the Westchase District Trail System via Terry Hershey Trail and Buffalo Bayou and eventually to Brays Bayou at Arthur Storey Park. By linking Buffalo and Brays Bayous, the connection and access are a Houston first.
25th Anniversary Reflections Series: First-ever Corporate Challenge Held in 1998

A reprint from the 1998 Summer issue of Westchase Today showcased the first-ever Corporate Challenge.

Westchase District's first-ever Corporate Challenge was held in the spring of 1998. Approximately 100 athletes participated in the event representing a dozen Westchase District businesses. Back then, there were eight different events, including one that required participants to swim in the Quillian pools wearing a coat & tie and then take off the workplace attire and pass it to their co-worker who would continue the relay.

The event generated nearly $1,500 for Texas Special Olympics. The team representing the Adam's Mark Hotel won top honors. 
HWCOC Hosts Governmental Affairs Zoom Meeting on Minimizing Flooding Impact on West Houston

As part of its Governmental Affairs webinar luncheon, the Houston West Chamber of Commerce is hosting a program on Flooding Resilience - Overcoming Houston's Signature Feature. The program will be held via Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. 

The webinar features the Honorable Tom Ramsey, former Mayor of Spring Valley, and Jim Blackburn, Baker Institute Rice faculty scholar and professor in the practice of environmental law. Participants can hear about what is being done to protect businesses now, the economic impact of flooding, and how West Houston is managing floods locally.

The purpose of HWCOC's Governmental Affairs is to provide leadership and support on legislative issues that may affect HWCOC member businesses. The event is free with registration. For more information, contact Devyn Waggoner.

New Maintenance Director Kelly Aylesworth Brings 20 Years of Horticulture Expertise to District


On the Trail: Kelly Aylesworth is Maintenance Director for Westchase District.

There isn't a question that Westchase District's new maintenance director Kelly Aylesworth can't answer about landscaping and horticulture. That's because Aylesworth has been in the horticulture industry for 20 years where she learned every aspect of the industry. A graduate of Sam Houston State University, she has more than 17 years of experience in landscape maintenance operations and another three years in landscape water management services like how to install or build proper water irrigation systems.

In 2003, Aylesworth obtained her Texas Certified Landscape Professional Certification. Aylesworth will oversee the maintenance operations of all public and open spaces in Westchase District as well as assist with special beautification and enhancement projects. Aylesworth is a native Houstonian.
