Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

November 2022

Kelley Meade MD

Looking Ahead

Respiratory season is upon us and by now you should have gotten your flu shot and hopefully a bivalent COVID booster.  All faculty are reminded to upload their outside vaccines on the Occupational Health Portal.

I had the pleasure of attending the California Medical Association House of Delegates as part of a new UC delegation of the Academic Practice Forum.  It was an important meeting where we addressed healthcare reform, reproductive health and other important topics.  We were reminded of why advocacy is so important. Jack Resnick, UCSF Chair of Dermatology and President of the AMA gave a wonderful presentation.

New faculty on our campus this month include:

Raymond Sze, MD has joined us as Chief of Radiology.  Please also welcome two new anesthesiologists to our organization:  Alice Barnes, MD and Kellie Moore, MD, as well as a new pediatric surgeon, Sarah Cairo, MD, MPH.

If you haven’t heard already Suzanne Sutton has joined our team as Director of Strategic Projects and Initiatives.  She is assisting with all parts of the academic mission.

Save the Date:

December 7th from 5:00-6:00pm (via Zoom) is our new date

for an All-Faculty Meeting with BCH Oakland & SF

More info coming soon!

What’s new in the CMO’s office?

Joan Zoltanski, MD, MBA is our new cross bay CMO. She started October 17, 2022. We are thrilled to work with her.

Also, as of November 1st we now have some updates to the Medical Staff Office (MSO) Barbara Laders-Barrett is now Interim Director of the MSO.  Additionally, we have joined forces with a major efficiency called a Credential Verification Organization (CVO) which allows new and reappointing faculty to use one portal for verifications. The full roll-out will be in January 2023.

Thanks to the APEX team we have some new efficiencies going live later this month following the November 15th upgrade for In Basket and Result handling.

Just a plug that VOALTE is now our standard compliant provider communication tool. Please check out the tip-sheet specific to your service.

Let's see this through!

UCSF Faculty Development Day 2022

In case you missed it please check out the website and link noted in the message from Irene Merry:

I wanted to draw your attention to the Faculty Development 2022 materials that are now posted on our website.

These includes-slide decks, handouts and videos of the plenary sessions. Additionally, there is a comprehensive list of campus resources that are invaluable for all faculty

Although over 170 faculty members (mainly newly appointees) attended the sessions we do understand that due to various conflicts others could not, so wanted to ensure that these materials were available and distributed as widely as possibly.

Please contact Irene.Merry@ucsf.edu if you have any questions.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series

The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and

ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH

Treadwell2019.jpg

From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD

DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland

Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine

Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

BCH DEI/AR COUNCIL UPDATES

The DEI/AR Council is proud to present our second annual Action Plan for Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals in FY2022. This strategic plan was created collaboratively by the BCH DEI/AR Council, Senior Leadership, Executive Leadership, and the Board of Directors. Moving forward, the work must continue to be collaborative since we know that the impacts of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism occur at individual, institutional and systemic levels.
