A Message from Pastor Scott

“His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace.” Ephesians 2:15

Like so many people, I have a lot of political and religious diversity in my family. Of my four sisters and one brother, one is Eastern Orthodox, one is Pentecostal, one started their own house church, and the other two don’t attend any church, but still consider themselves to be Christian. Being Presbyterian, I feel like the outlier in my family! We are also diverse in our politics and lifestyles, opinions about the vaccine, and so on. Sometimes it feels like we are very divided by these things and that a wall of sorts stands between us. It can be discouraging to feel that we have trouble having honest and open conversations.

When I feel this separation from my siblings, I turn to the message in Ephesians that declares that through the work of Jesus Christ on the cross the dividing wall of hostility between people has been torn down, and that his purpose is to create one new humanity (Eph. 2:14-16). I realize that the differences that exist between us are secondary, and even though the issues are important, they have been created and fed by forces around us. The deeper truth that I need to continually embrace is that Christ has made us one in Him, and we are brothers and sisters in the family of God, and fellow members in the body of Christ.

The truth of our unity in Christ does not make our differences go away, but it does help me to see those differences as secondary, and as things that do not ultimately define our relationship with each other. Members of families, and members of the family of God, have always had diverse opinions about all kinds of things. But we must never let those differences pull us apart and divide the body of Christ.

Shalom,
Scott

Clean Water for Haiti
Most of Haiti’s water sources are contaminated. Haiti’s water problem is widespread, and there isn’t a person in the country who isn’t affected by it in some way. We believe we can make a difference. Clean Water for Haiti keeps three things in focus – are we empowering people, are we improving life for the people we’re working with, and are the changes that are created through our work sustainable?

The Minute for Mission on Sunday, July 18 at both services is Clean Water for Haiti. Chris and Leslie Rolling will update us about the mission and how we can get involved. Please pray for them as they travel to the USA this week from Haiti.
