House Music Festival
Dear Friend,

"Join me, and together we can raise awareness about the deadly effects of Prostate Cancer." For the second time Plainfield’s House Music Festival for a cause will raise awareness for Prostate Cancer this Saturday, September 18. We know from experience that we are more successful when we are careful. Success begins with taking care of ourselves and understanding the consequences. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men.
We believe that our community’s wellbeing begins with
self-awareness.

The House Music Festival will begin at noon and culminate at 9 pm. It features special performances by several of Plainfield’s talented DJ entertainers. AmeriGroup Health Services and other health organizations have partnered with the city to provide critical education and resources to fight prostate cancer. The event features free Prostate cancer screening, and free COVID-19 vaccination and testing, several of Plainfield’s famous food trucks, giveaway raffles, commercial vendors, and other attractions.

Our first House Music Festival in 2019 was a huge success attracting crowds of over 3000, exercising all due caution we expect to see even greater participation this year.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men. A study conducted by The National Cancer Institute determined that one (1) in eight (8) of Black and Brown men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Men of color are 2.5 times more likely to die from the disease when compared to non-Hispanic white males. Early detection, diagnosis, and treatment play a critical role in determining a successful course of action.

Bring your loved ones, families and friends and be an anchor that helps to save a life. Join us this Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Cedar Brook Park and together,
we can break the intergenerational cycle of debilitating social health conditions. Come ready to laugh, dance, share community with your family, friends and neighbors. Let’s enjoy a festival that celebrates life and wellbeing.

Festival de Música de Casa
Querido Friend,

Creando Un Plainfield. Un Futuro.

Remember Four Little Girls
Earlier this week, we commemorated the twentieth anniversary of one of the worst events in American history, September 11th.

Today, September 15, 2021, sadly is the 58th anniversary of another vicious attack that also seethed with the hate and intolerance of terrorists. It was on this day at 10:22a.m. in 1963 that a bomb exploded in the basement of the 16th Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama killing four little girls.

Addie Mae Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Carole Rosamond, and Cynthia Dionne Wesley were in the basement of the Church, changing into choir robes, in preparation for the sermon "A Rock That Will Not Roll One" when their lives were savagely cut short by the explosion. Martin Luther King Jr. called the attack "one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity."

The Church was targeted because it had been a center of Civil Rights activity in Birmingham. Prior to the bombing the Church had been used by Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph David Abernathy and Fred Shuttlesworth for civil rights organizing activities.

This vile event that occurred late 1963 was a key catalyst for the passage of seminal legislation the next summer, the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

As a child of the 1960s, who was once a little girl growing up in the South, attending Church every Sunday, I see myself in Addie Mae, Carol, Carole and Cynthia, as I know many of you do as well. When I think of these four little girls, I wonder what they would have become had hate not ended their lives prematurely. We should be sure to always know their names and think of their sacrifice. And remember, that the giants of the Civil Rights movement, whose many shoulders we stand on, include the narrow, delicate shoulders of four little girls.

FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE:
Governor Murphy Establishes Wealth Disparity Task Force
This action fulfills a key commitment from his 2020 State of the State address and will work towards combatting long-standing wealth gaps based on race and ethnicity
TRENTON, NJ – Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 262, establishing the Wealth Disparity Task Force, which was previously announced on Juneteenth of this year. This action fulfills a key commitment from his 2020 State of the State address and will work towards combatting long-standing wealth gaps based on race and ethnicity.

“Income inequality is one of the preeminent and far-reaching issues in today’s society,” said Governor Murphy. “We cannot have a stronger and fairer New Jersey without examining the causes of our wealth gaps and without establishing strategies to combat this long-standing problem. I look forward to working with the Wealth Disparity Task Force and continuing our Administration’s efforts to create an economy that works for every New Jerseyan.”

“I want to thank Governor Murphy for taking action to respond to the racial wealth disparities that have been plaguing our Black and Hispanic or Latino residents since New Jersey gained statehood in 1787. The root causes of these disparities have taken centuries to establish within our system and they will not be fixed overnight. This taskforce and the working groups established within it will work to address the economic, housing, criminal justice, and health inequities that exist,” said Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, who serves as Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs. “I am honored to be selected as a chair of this taskforce and I look forward to getting to work with my colleagues Commissioner Caride, President Holloway and Maria Vizcarrondo to examine causes and solutions for these long-standing problems.”

“I am honored to serve as one of the four co-chairs on the Governor’s Wealth Disparity Task Force,” said Department of Banking and Insurance Commissioner Marlene Caride. “I want to thank the Governor for addressing this issue and look forward to working with my colleagues to examine the underlying causes and effects of the wealth disparity gap. As one of the most diverse states in the nation, we must ensure that residents of all New Jersey communities are positioned for success.”

FROM THE WHITE HOUSE:
A Proclamation on National POW/MIA
Recognition Day 2021
When service members take an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, they do so knowing that they may be called upon to make great sacrifices to ensure and sustain our shared values. These patriots accept those risks and rush to fulfill the mission, no matter how harsh or dangerous the conditions. They embody the best of the American spirit. For the families and friends who wait at home, anxious for news of their loved ones, these sacrifices can cause great pain. For the families of the more than 81,600 service members who remain missing in action — the pain and grief is compounded by a lack of closure, and the hope that their sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, parents, and grandparents will one day return home.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we remember the debt we owe to them and to their families. We pay tribute to our former prisoners of war and recommit to the difficult but essential task of seeking out answers for the families of those still missing. We will always remember and honor our Nation’s prisoners of war and those still missing in action, and keep faith with our promise as a Nation to bring all of our heroes home.

Every day, the iconic black and white flag — a powerful symbol in recognition of the heroism and sacrifice of American POWs and MIAs — is flown above the White House. It is a mark of reverence and of solidarity with all those who await answers. Each day, this flag flies over memorials and cemeteries, on military installations, at local post offices, and on the front lawns of homes across the Nation. This flag remains a symbol of America’s commitment to honor the sacrifices of all those who serve.
