WEST PIKELAND TOWNSHIP NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 2021
PIKELAND ROAD CLOSED
West Pikeland Township experienced widespread flooding during Hurricane Ida on September 1, 2021. Ten roads were closed in our township during the peak of the storm. Minor damage occurred to the approach on Horseshoe Trail Bridge, however the road is safe and open to traffic. Pikeland Road was not so fortunate. The approach to the Pikeland Bridge was damaged by floodwaters from Pickering Creek, and Pikeland Road between Rt 113 and Dogwood Lane remains closed. We anticipate that the bridge will be reopened in the coming weeks. Please visit our website at westpikeland.com for continuing updates.
Hands Off the Barricades
We've said this before and regret that we have to say it again.

DO NOT DRIVE AROUND ROAD BARRICADES

Barricades are there for a reason. They are not placed to inconvenience you, but to keep you safe. Additionally, it is illegal to move barricades. If you see a barricade, turn around.
Residents in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia, and York counties impacted by Ida can now apply for federal aid: disasterassistance.gov OR call
1-800-621-3362

New Backhoe
Almost a year after a fire at Pine Creek Park destroyed our barn and it's contents, including our township's backhoe, we are pleased to show off our new backhoe, a JCB with roof mounted lights for use at night. It has already been hard at work, removing trees from the park's back bridge.

Keep an eye out for this workhorse on township roads, we're happy to have her in our fleet!
ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWS
Renewable Energy Series a Success
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

On Saturday evening, September 11th, community members had a conversation about renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions to zero by year 2050, and what individuals and municipalities can do to reach this goal. Special guests Jess Cadorette, Chester County Director for Conservation Voters of PA and Paula Kline, Educator and Sustainability Expert joined the discussion held on the Chester Springs Library’s lawn.

Participants shared what they are currently doing to reduce carbon emissions, as well as what they plan to do in the future. Such as, home energy audits conducted by PECO and considering green options and renewable technologies for transportation, appliances, and home maintenance. John Matthews, a member of the West Pikeland Township Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) says, “Individually we can make a difference. . .and influence our neighbors and businesses by implementing these sustainable recommendations.”

This was the final conversation in a summer-long series hosted by the Chester Springs Library and the EAC. Conversations were funded through a Libraries Transforming Communities grant from the American Library Association.

LEGISLATURE NEWS
COVID-19 Vaccines
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and those around you from serious illnesses from COVID-19. The available vaccines are very effective against COVID and the Delta variant. If you do contract the virus while vaccinated, you are much less likely to get severe disease, be hospitalized, or succumb to it. In the face of new variants, we must continue to do our part to stop the spread. All Pennsylvanians age 12 and older are eligible to receive the vaccine and are encouraged to get vaccinated. If you have not been vaccinated or have only been partially vaccinated against COVID-19, please consider getting fully vaccinated. You can search for all local COVID-19 vaccine providers by visiting www.vaccines.gov

Unclaimed Property
Nearly $4 billion in collectibles, dormant bank and retirement accounts, jewelry, military medals, stocks, and uncashed checks in Pennsylvania are waiting to be claimed by their rightful owners. One in ten Pennsylvanians have unclaimed property, and the average property claim is worth $2,000. Chances are you or someone you know has property waiting to be claimed. The first step is to search the online database on the Pennsylvania Treasury’s website, www.patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property/. If you find you are owed property, feel free to contact my office at (610) 692-2112 for assistance in navigating the process to claim it.

SEPTA Senior Key Cards
Senior citizens age 65 and older are eligible for the SEPTA Key Senior Fare program. Eligible riders ride free or at a half fare on all SEPTA routes and regional rail with the SEPTA Key card.
