PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Diane Prystas, Principal
Kristy Jackson, Assistant Principal
Dear Roy Cloud Families,

I’m excited to be writing to you after completing a full week of Distance Learning. We made it through the challenges of the first few days and we are standing tall and strong! As TS Eliot said, “If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?”
As Kristy and I visited virtual classrooms this week, it was evident the commitment our staff has to fostering supportive relationships, establishing high expectations, and offering meaningful opportunities for student engagement. Please read my full message for the week to hear how each grade has been putting our new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program, CharacterStrong, into action.
This is just the beginning of building intentional relationships between students and the adults “in the building.” Thank you to all of our families for supporting this endeavor. You, too, are equally present in the school building and we are grateful for your investment.

Sincerely,
Diane

ROY CLOUD SEL CURRICULUM
Purposeful People (K-5) and CharacterStrong (6-8)
Every classroom at Roy Cloud – from kindergarten to eighth grade – incorporates Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons into their daily routine. These lessons have already begun since the first day of school with a focus on building relationships and community! Please see below for introduction letters to families about the SEL curriculum we are using at Roy Cloud:

Welcome to the Roy Cloud Family, Ms. Daniels!
Ms. Daniels has joined Roy cloud as our full time counselor. Here's a bit about her:

Hi! My name is Sierra Daniels and I am excited to join the Roy Cloud family! A little bit about me: I earned my M.Ed. in School Counseling at the University of Southern California and my B.A. at California State University, Fresno.

My experiences include working with students in the classroom, counseling office, and in-patient psychiatric facility settings. I spend my spare time with family, painting, baking, and playing with my dogs.

I love working with fellow educators, parents, students, and community members to ensure the best education for all. I understand that the current pandemic has resulted in high levels of stress and has increased anxiety for many. It is my goal to support and provide resources to our families and teachers during this unusual time.
Thank You for Your Generosity to Our Family in Need
Last week, we sent out a special notice about a Roy Cloud family in need after the unfortunate loss of a parent. In a short window of time, the GoFundMe set up for this family raised over $14,000. The generosity of our Roy Cloud community is astounding and we hope this donation will bring some peace and relief to the family during a difficult time. Thank you for helping ease their burden.
Calling All Books Back to the Library!
Ms. Lera, our wonderful library media tech, would like families to know that we still have many library books out from the Spring. She will be sending email notices to families that still have books out. Please help your child locate the books as soon as possible. Starting this week for your convenience, there will be a Book Drop Box in front of the library by the Red Oak parking lot.

Thanks for your help refilling our library shelves!

Where Do Your Direct Donations Dollars Go?
Among other things, did you know that our PE and STEAM teachers, who conduct live classes on Wednesdays, are funded by the PTO?

Ms. Kwa is our STEAM teacher and runs the Makery when campus is open. Her lessons provide invaluable enrichment activities for Roy Cloud students designed to engage creativity and spark interest. She also assists our teachers with on-campus tech support and is helping them navigate the transition to distance learning.

Mr. Worthington has been instructing middle school PE at Roy Cloud for several years and has expanded his curriculum this year to bring physical activity and healthy living to all Roy Cloud students.
All of this is made possible by your generous donations to the Roy Cloud PTO. Our PTO Direct Donations campaign is running through October 30th. Please donate today and support the programs that wouldn’t be possible without your contribution! For more information about PTO sponsored programs, please visit www.roycloudpto.com.

"New to Roy Cloud" Families Welcome & Info Session
Is your family new to Roy Cloud but your child isn't a kindergartner? For families who join a new school in any grade beyond kindergarten, it's often hard to get up to speed and feel like a part of the community. So, here's your opportunity to join our PTO officers for a discussion and Q&A session all about our school! Learn how to stay informed and get involved to enhance the experience for your child – and all children – at Roy Cloud.
