I’ve been working on my sermon for this Sunday. In the story of Moses, we have now come to the Red Sea and it is time to cross! As I work with that text and listen for a word for our day and place, I think of the great spiritual.
When Israel was in Egypt’s land, oppressed so hard they could not stand, let my people go!
No more shall they in bondage toil, let them come out with Egypt’s spoil, let my people go!
O let us all from bondage flee and let us all in Christ be free, let my people go!
Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land, tell old Pharaoh “Let my people go!”
The Old Testament story of salvation tells of how God used Moses to free and save the people from the sin and death of Pharaoh’s captivity. The New Testament story of salvation tells of how God used Jesus to free and save the world from the captivity of sin and death. “For freedom, Christ has set us free,” Paul wrote in Galatians. “Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
From Old Testament to New, from sea to shining sea….let freedom ring.
