Monthly Update | March 2022
A Message from our CEO
In March, we lift up Women’s History Month—fitting for an industry where women are the overwhelming majority. I am very proud of the legacy women have built over time—one of peace and problem solving that contributes to the world and multiplies its bounty. In that spirit, we are excited to uplift the work of nonprofits improving health equity and outcomes—particularly for Black women with triple negative breast cancer. Through a generous gift from Gilead Sciences, Inc., CEN is providing 3-hour professional development workshops for $20-40 each for staff, board members, and volunteers of Black-led healthcare organizations and/or organizations focused on advancing health equity for Black people.

This week in particular, I am reminded how much the world needs the energy of women. We are watching colonialism in real time as Russia attacks Ukraine and threatens nuclear war on the West. Many Ukrainians are fleeing in search of safety as others are mobilized to defend their sovereignty. As this immense tragedy unfolds, we grapple with the fact that bigotry never takes a day off. Black Ukrainians, nationals, and students living in Ukraine are being denied safe exit from the country because of the color of their skin. News outlets expose their bias as they report their shock that citizens of a “civilized nation” could become refugees overnight.

This week has been a roller coaster and an example of the complexity of our world. We must empathize with people as we hold them accountable for their behavior. It highlights that how we show up in our most trying moments is a clue to who we really are. My heart goes out to all who are affected by this situation.

My hope is that we heed the lessons of this time. We, as nonprofits doing the work to eliminate racism and other isms from our organizations, have to acknowledge our learning and evolution. We don’t always hit the mark. When others hold up a mirror to us about things we can do better, it is up to us to meet the moment.

I salute the nonprofits—and the armies of women who lead them—that are lifting their hands and voices to support peace and justice in our country and beyond. Who are the women and organizations you would like to honor at this time?
-Shana Peete, Chief Executive Officer

New Workshop – Telling a New Story: Inclusion in the Arts

Are you looking for effective tools to dismantle racism in the arts field? It's an open secret that the arts have lacked and continue to lack inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and liberation. To meet the call to embody IDEAL principles, we recommend starting with an examination of the cultures and oppressive structures within organizations and the field. Did You Know?
Each month we share articles/resources that challenge the way we view work and inspire a new way to affect community impact.
“So what exactly is the problem with dirty money? The argument I offer here is that the moral issue with what others call “dirty money” is not about the money, per se, but rather about the terms of exchange between nonprofits and donors.”
Writer Lauren A. Taylor, an assistant professor at New York University, shares a framework intended to help guide nonprofit managers’ thinking around assessing donations that pose moral concern and explores how divided people are about nonprofits’ avoiding “dirty money,” or money from controversial sources.
