Helpful Article for Parents Who Are Essential Workers

The Danger of Burnout and Secondary Trauma During the COVID-19 Pandemic
by Shirley Davis
Police officers, nurses, doctors, nursing aides, and many other professionals stand on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. While catching the virus themselves is a huge danger, the second danger is burnout, with the third being secondary trauma.
This article will focus on the danger of burnout and how first responders are at risk of having burnout and secondary trauma.

What is Burnout?

Being a first responder during COVID-19, and indeed, any time during the helping professions often brings people into stressful situations. First responders may witness human suffering, and because they are human, feel powerless to help.

The short answer to the question of burnout is that it is a feeling of desperate exhaustion and being overwhelmed during exposure to distressing situations. The human cost of burnout is horrendous to essential workers makes the virus pale by comparison.

Signs of burnout include:
  • Being easily frustrated
  • Sadness, depression, or apathy
  • Blaming others
  • Irritability
  • Poor hygiene
  • Feeling tired, exhausted, or overwhelmed
  • Lacking feelings, or being indifferent
  • Feeling a failure
  • Feeling there is nothing you can do that will help
  • Feeling a need for alcohol or drugs to cope
  • Feeling the inability to do their job well

The workloads we expect essential workers to handle, coupled with being separated from their families, is a perfect recipe for an emotional disaster.  READ MORE HERE

BABY CORNER
Over the past few weeks, I have shared a few different ways for our little ones to be creative and have a tactical experience through sensory activities. Another fun way to let your little one get their hands dirty and pretend to be an artist is also the simplest and mess free.
Mess Free Painting

Supplies:
  • Paintbrush(es)
  • Water

Let your baby have a paintbrush or brushes and a cup of water. Let them go outside and “paint” things you’d never really let them paint, like the front porch or deck. There are endless opportunities to paint things outside! They will love it. Give them different types of brushes to extend the activity.

**Always remember to supervise them and make sure they do not put the paintbrush or anything small they find along the way in their mouths. **

Have fun!  Miss Tara R.
Rainbow Walk

Next time you take a walk around the block, go over the colors in the rainbow. Point out the red stop sign, orange flower or leaf, yellow mailbox, etc. Find things in your neighborhood that match each color from red to purple. Keep going through the colors in order until you’ve finished your walk. This is the perfect way to teach them early how to practice mindfulness.
Miss Kathy fans, make sure to watch our Facebook page Friday mornings for her weekly baby and toddler programs. Babies and Toddlers class starts at 10:00 a.m. and class for 2-3-year olds starts at 10:30 a.m. No registration necessary!
PRESCHOOL PLACE
Here is a fun skill and concept to practice with your older preschooler...that of tracing objects and overlapping shapes.

Gather some cups or lids, or whatever you’d like, and help your child hold down the object while tracing around it. This can be tricky for a young child, but a good thing to practice. Have your child move the objects around, and trace shapes that overlap with each other. Using crayons, markers, colored pencils, paint, or a combination thereof, your child can color in each individual section that was created by the tracing.

Help your preschooler to understand the shared space created when two shapes overlap, and the endless design possibilities that can be made. Once your child gets the hang of it, try other shapes as well! -- Miss Debbie D.

Virtual Reality is not science fiction, it is science fact! But if you don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for a headset, why not make your own for under $20? You can make and experience VR for cheap, using cardboard, some lenses off Amazon, and your smartphone. The Inventionland blog has step by step instructions that will show you how it’s done. You can also check out Creativity Buzz on YouTube if you prefer a video tutorial.
At Home Learning

Leaving New York State might not be a great idea right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t see what’s out there. Our bodies might be at home, but our minds (and our eyes) can go lots of places…thanks to virtual reality. Using a headset you’ve bought or crafted, and your smartphone, you can visit hundreds of parks, zoos, and museums all over the world. Try the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in our nation’s capital. They provide free virtual tours  where you can move through past and present exhibits from the comfort of your home.
