Nixon Early Act Holds Successful Holiday Food and Toy Drive
Just before Thanksgiving, Nixon Elementary School’s Early Act Club announced it would be holding a Holiday Food and Toy Drive to support Roxbury Social Services this holiday season.

Nixon families and community members turned out strong at Nixon School on the afternoon of December 11th donating numerous food items and new unused toys. Early Act Club Advisor Kerry Hamberger shared, “All the donations got dropped off Monday morning to Social Services. They were beyond grateful for all the toys and food.”

Hamberger added, “We still have more to bring at the school!” The remaining donations will be made either today or Monday.

Nixon’s Food and Toy Drive this season was set up as a contactless system where individuals could drop off items outside of Nixon School. Members of Nixon’s Early Act Club was onsite to help with the collection. Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury Plans Outdoor Classrooms for Rundown Tennis Courts
They’ve been unused, overgrown, and crumbling eyesores for years, but soon the former tennis courts between Lincoln-Roosevelt School and Franklin School in Succasunna will be removed and replaced with pavilions for outdoor classrooms and other uses.

The Roxbury school board, on Monday, approved spending $1.4 million for site preparation and installation of the pavilions. The money will come from the district’s capital reserve account and the work will be done by Ben Shaffer Recreation of Jefferson.

“There are basically going to be two pavilion-like structures,” said Roxbury Schools Business Administrator Joseph Mondanaro. He said the open-sided shelters will be about 50 feet wide by about 100 feet long and likely will be divided with walls to create four classrooms. The proposed new use for the old tennis courts was recommended by a committee of district “administrators, teachers, principals and various stakeholders who are going sit down and tweak the design,” Mondanaro said. Spring sports dates announced for New Jersey high schools
The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) announced its plan for spring sports on Friday, Dec. 11. The NJSIAA Sports Advisory Task Force – the statewide group of athletic administrators tasked with developing a return-to-play plan for New Jersey high school sports – announced that spring sports will return in 2021. After a year without spring sports competition, the NJSIAA outlined a schedule for the spring season, identified as Season 4.

The schedule offers the same number of games to be played as during a conventional season, while also providing the opportunity for statewide championships.
To ensure there is no overlap between Season 2A and Season 3 during the winter, the NJSIAA pushed back some start dates.

For all spring sports, virtual contact may start on March 1, 2021. For boys tennis, practice will begin on March 26, with competition commencing on April 19. Golf practices may begin on April 1, with competition starting April 9. Baseball and softball pitchers and catchers may begin practicing on March 26. For all other spring sports, practices will begin on April 1, with competition taking place on April 19. Competition will end no later than June 20. Gaels Going Green
Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.

To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
KES Student Spotlight: Victoria's Tips, Tricks, and Facts to Help Save our Planet by Recycling
As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.

This week's tips, tricks, and facts from Victoria is, "It is important to practice the 3 Rs. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Try your best to use reusable bags when shopping."

Check out Victoria's past tips, trips, and facts on our website here.
PSA: Anti-Idling at District Schools Reminder
Winter has arrived! With colder weather upon us, your district green team wanted to share this important quick PSA.

In January 2019, the Roxbury Board of Education passed a resolution regarding the district's anti-idling initiative. Part of the resolution included the following bullet points. All those in bold and in red are what our transportation department and district have already been doing. Not bad and we're on our way to better!
  • Turn off school bus engines while waiting to load and to unload students
  • Turn off vehicles when parents are parked and waiting to pick up and drop off children
  • Installing "idle-free zone" signs at school drop-off and pick-up locations
  • Use the newest buses for the longest routes and maintain buses properly to eliminate any visible exhaust
  • Complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
  • Encourage parent, student, faculty, and staff drivers to turn off their engines after 10 seconds if they plan to remain at a location for more than 30 seconds, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times.

Let's all work together for a cleaner future! Follow our initiative online here!
School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

Recycling, trash collection changes in Roxbury
The township has rearranged its year-end holiday recycling and trash collection schedule in partnership with the hauler, Blue Diamond, which is mutually beneficial to both residents and the hauler.

This year’s Christmas and New Year’s holidays fall on a Friday, leaving Thursday and Friday’s routes missing two weeks’ worth of recycling collection.

The new schedule allows for the Thursday and Friday routes to have a full recycling and trash collection over the two back-to-back holiday weeks, helping to minimize the significant volume of recycling that many residents would have collected due to lack of recycling pickups.

The new schedule is as follows:
Collection services for Routes 4 & 5 will change to the following:
  • Thursday, Dec. 24 – Trash and Comingle collection – Route 4
  • Friday, Dec. 25 – No collection – Route 5
  • Saturday, Dec. 26 – Trash and Comingle collection – Route 5
  • Thursday, Dec. 31 – Trash and Paper collection – Route 4
  • Friday, Jan. 1 – No collection – Route 5
  • Saturday, Jan. 2 – Trash and Paper collection – Route 5

We strongly encourage our residents to download the free waste and recycling app: Recycle Coach. The app is a great tool for us to stay connected with our residents. The web-app contains information our residents need to know about our residential garbage and recycling services.

"We also want to remind our residents that the recycling center will be open during the holiday weekends, standard working hours Saturday and Sunday 8-4 for recycling drop off," said Kellie Ann Keyes, Roxbury Township Recycling Coordinator. For more information, contact Kellie Ann Keyes at 973-448-2053 or keyesk@roxburynj.us. Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.

Philanthropic Roxbury Christmas Displays: Bigger for the Better Good
It’s almost a given: One year, you decide to really go all-out with the outdoor Christmas decorations and then, every year afterward, you need to make it bigger and better.

Neither Danny D’Amico nor Rob Katz will deny it. Year after year, the Succasunna residents improve their front yard lighting displays, adding more dazzle each season.

But for D’Amico, Katz, and their families, yearly expansions of wattage and color are not the only goals. Both also hope their efforts at being more spectacular will equate to more holiday joy for the less fortunate in town. Click here to read more about this festive display of lights and how it's helping the people of Roxbury from TAPinto Roxbury.

Roxbury Kiwanis Plans Free Holiday Food Distribution
The new Kiwanis Club of Greater Roxbury is wasting no time when it comes to helping the community; it's holding a free holiday food give-away on Dec. 21 The goal of the effort, taking place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, 9 Makin Lane, Succasunna, is to help relieve "the financial strain put on families during this pandemic," said the club. It said it will be distributing 100 boxes containing up to 45 pounds of canned food, fresh produce and groceries.

At the food give-away, recipients will stay in their cars. "Drive up, and we will put the food right in the vehicle," said the club, noting that all recipients will be required to register in advance at www.roxburykiwanis.org.

Kiwanis Club of Greater Roxbury noted it is made up of volunteers and does not have a paid staff. The members "are committed to providing an efficient and effective system for distributing food to alleviate hunger in our community, one family at a time," the club said.

Santa's Making Roxbury Rounds but Keep Your Distance
Hoping to lift the COVID-dampened spirits of Roxbury residents, township fire and first-aid volunteers will be driving Santa around town, but the big guy won't be giving out hugs, handing out toys, or signing autographs.

All three fire and EMS companies in the township have announced plans to escort Jolly St. Nick through their neighborhoods. However, in an effort to keep things safe, they are not planning any up-close-and-personal encounters. Also, none will be doing the holiday gift deliveries to less fortunate children, something done in past years.

Two of the Santa tours are taking place tomorrow, (Dec. 12), and one is slated for Dec. 19. The decision to even tour the town with Santa was not easy for department officials unwilling to risk either their member or the public to coronavirus exposure. On Nov. 20, Roxbury Fire and First Aid Co. 2, in Landing, said the "Santa Run" wasn’t going to happen. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Roxbury Launches
Holiday Decorating Contest
A few questions for the holiday decoration fanatics of Roxbury: Do you have what it takes to be a master of the festive front yard? Will you risk the frustration of one bad bulb killing a string of 100 tiny lights? Can you rationalize the jaw-dropping, post holidays JCP&L bill? If so, you have about a month to do what it takes to become a winner in the 2020 Roxbury Recreation Holiday Home Decorating Contest.

The contest is the township’s effort to help Roxbury residents end a depressing, COVID-tinged year with a little cheer and good-natured competition, said Recreation Department Program Director Ryan Williams. “This contest is a salute to those who brave the elements, meticulously stringing up lights for everyone to enjoy,” Williams wrote on the department’s Facebook page. It’s on that page that all submitted entries will be displayed. Winners, to be announced Dec. 22, will be based on the number of “likes” they receive. Wreaths to Be Placed
on 622 Roxbury Veteran Graves
The goal is to place a wreath on every military veteran grave in Succasunna’s cemeteries later this month. Even with COVID-19 causing hardship, the Ferro Monte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (FMDAR) will get that done. The organization has secured wreath donations for all 622 graves, said FMDAR State Recording Secretary Kim Armstrong. “We have made our goal,” she said. “We have always made the goal except for our very first year in 2014.”

The wreath placements by family members and volunteers - part of the annual Wreaths Across America program - will take place Dec. 18 and Dec. 19. In past years, when the weather allowed it, the wreath placements happened on one day and included a large public ceremony. Not this year, thanks to COVID-19.

Watch it Online
The wreath laying will be done by appointment only on Dec 18 and on Dec. 19. There will be a virtual ceremony that can be viewed online Dec. 19, not the usual event that included dozens of people – including public officials – gathering at the cemeteries on Main Street in Succasunna. Armstrong said the pre-recorded ceremony will include appearances by local Scouts, some U.S. Marines, Picatinny Arsenal Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Adam Woytovich and some elected officials. She said people interested in watching the virtual ceremony should keep checking the organization’s Facebook page for details on when it will be available. People who want to participate in placing the wreaths can sign-up at RoxburyWAA.org, email Anderson at FerroMonteDAR@gmail.com or call her at 973-584-9255. Roxbury Woman's Club seeks monetary donations to continue philanthropy work
The Roxbury Woman's Club is seeking donations to help keep its local philanthropic efforts alive. According to the group, the COVID-19 pandemic is curtailing fundraising plans, and the club may have to fold its local contributions if donations are not raised. As such, for the first time in its 61-year-history, the club is reaching out for financial support. In prior years scholarships have been awarded to help defray continuing education expenses of Roxbury High School girls and to women attending County College of Morris who will re-enter the workforce. Financial and in-kind assistance has also been provided to local non-profit organizations and to help with urgent financial needs of veterans, individuals and families facing devastating health challenges or crises.

Donations may be made by sending a check payable to Roxbury Woman’s Club and mailing to Roxbury Woman’s Club PO Box 13, Succasunna, N.J. 07876.

To date, members have kept active with several socially-distanced projects, including sewing face masks for local hospitals and the Roxbury Public Library’s mask project; setting up seasonal displays at the corner of Eyland Ave. and Route 10 West; collecting sweatshirts for Operation Chillout – an organization dedicated to assisting homeless veterans; filling Holiday Stockings with personal necessities for troops overseas; raising funds and walking for Alzheimer’s Association Greater NJ Chapter; collecting shoes for Soles4Souls, and supporting Social Services with donations of food and gift cards. Membership is open to all women over 18. For more information, contact membership chair Heather Champagne at (862) 207-9767 or email roxburywomansclub@gmail.com.
