Classic 2020. The software won't rotate the photo, so you get Chiclet sideways!
July 28, 2020
Greetings!

Hi folks! We've been so busy, I've not had time to write. Sorry! So much going on here...

I hope you are all doing as well as possible during pandemania.

We could use help IMMEDIATELY today and tomorrow. We are prepping for an unexpected event on the ship tomorrow 5-8pm for architecture firm Snohetta. They called just days ago! We're using that event as the trigger to tidy up so we can start doing virtual TankerTours. Plus, there are events in the parking lot next to our Pandemic PopUp Park.this week (see list at bottom) that also make us want to re-hang our fence banners and new string lights and more.

Can you come help?

Here's the To Do list.

1)     4 small hand sanitizers pump bottles for food tables and bar table
2)     4 brochure racks
3)     Printer ink

Socially-distanced public events here this week:

Thursday, 9/19, 5-8pm Brackish Brooklyn. Monthly concert series. Experimental music, art, poetry, and dance. Curated by Angela Morris, Stevie May, and Stella Diming Zhong

Saturday, 9/19, 3-5pm DJ Ze Motion spins vinyl. Not sure what kind of music. He plays all sorts.

Please see our webpage VOLUNTEER for a summary of work not related to programs.

As paypack to you, since people are craving socially-distanced spaces and outdoor time, we want to offer volunteers access to the ship MARY A. WHALEN and kayaks (depending on skill level).

Does your employer match hours you volunteer? We’ve learned that some firms will make a cash donation to PortSide (at a rate they set) for hours you volunteer here. Please inquire.

Thanks for whatever you can do! Stay strong, everyone! Brooklyn strong.

Best,

Some thoughts about handling stress of social distancing

Here's what our crew learned about handling social isolation during the 9 years that PortSide was stuck in the containerport where the ship had no public access and was not even visible from the street.

Replicating what sustained our beleaguered crew may help you: a strong belief in what we were doing, a lively sense of humor, and compliments. Getting a compliment meant being seen and was hugely uplifting. So compliment and thank others liberally; that makes good energy flow and will bring it back to you. End your day affirming yourself and your day, what was good about it and how you handled it, even if it was just “that sandwich was great.” Falling asleep thinking about positive things makes for better dreams and a stronger tomorrow.

Stay strong. Stay safe. Digital hugs until we see you aboard the MARY again.
