Dear Bet Torah Family:

This past Saturday afternoon I was walking with my kids in town and we witnessed the food distribution in the Mt Kisco train station parking lot.

It was humbling.

A pandemic doesn't care how hard you work or how carefully you have planned for your family. It was clear from the line of cars, all different makes, models and years, that many more people than before regardless of how well they were doing have found themselves in need of food for their families.

The effort to prevent hunger has been met by a tsunami of job loss amongst people who live paycheck to paycheck and reduced income amongst others. The Mt Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry was set up to meet a certain amount of local need. That need has expanded numerically and geographically. There are now multiple large scale distributions each week at the train station parking lot, at the Boys and Girls Club and at Neighbors Link. I spoke to our member Roberta Horowitz today who works part time at the food pantry. She said the need quickly went from 300 to 600 families. We are fortunate to have such committed communal partners, especially now.

If you would like to help out this effort please consider a donation to the Mt Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry.

We also continue to run our Bet Torah Shabbat meals program and this past week close to 20 volunteers delivered 40 meals. If you would like to help out this effort please consider a donation to our Shabbat Meals Program

We have some culminating events and I want to call your attention in particular to the the Zimriah this Sunday May 17th from 10-11am (Zoom meeting  Meeting ID: 992 5970 8133 and  Password: 202060).

At the Zimriah we will be honoring the memory and legacy of Dr. Sheila Adler. A fund has been established in her name called the Dr. Sheila Adler Innovation Fund the purpose of which is to support new and experimental ways of providing Jewish education. This will not only support our learning community but truly reflect Sheila's cutting edge approach. Nili Ionascu will be speaking and paying tribute to Sheila. Here is more information about the Dr. Sheila Adler Innovation Fund.

Also this Wednesday I am convening a conversation with our college students. If you have one in your home please share this information with them.

Finally, in the coming days we will be:
  • Celebrating our adult b'nei mitzvah students on the holiday of Shavuot Friday May 29th.
  • Recognizing our Nursery School 4s graduates and holding our moving up ceremony on June 5th.
  • Blessing our High School Seniors on June 5th.
  • Saying thank you and wishing Cantor Herman well on June 7th.
More information on each of these to come.

Sending love and hopes for health and well being to you and your family.
