NWPL  News & Events
for August 18  and beyond
From the Executive Director

If you haven't seen me around Woodstock, or in the library this week, there's a good reason for that. This week I write to you from the New England Library Leadership Symposium in North Andover, Massachusetts. I had the great honor to be one of three Vermont library directors selected to attend this symposium. I am very grateful to the NWPL staff who are capably running the library in my absence. I'm also grateful to the Vermont Library Association who provided a full scholarship to enable me to attend this valuable institute. Last, but not least, I thank the NWPL president, Anne Marinello and all of the trustees who so enthusiastically support professional development and continuing education for NWPL staff.

At this symposium I am joined by 40 other public library leaders from Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. We are deeply engaged in group learning in an intensive immersion experience. We are exploring topics that will directly inform our leadership in the libraries and communities we serve. Our inquiry involves the issues facing public libraries today. We will come away with tools and strategies to lead change in our communities and in our profession. It has been fascinating to encounter public library leaders from other states and hear how they have engaged their communities and aligned library services to meet the needs of their patrons. One library director shared a beautiful story of a non-verbal, autistic child's very first words being spoken during the weekly library story hour. Another library director sends staff into a local transitional family shelter to offer library books and programs to families in need.

I am more excited than ever to return to Woodstock next week and continue my "Listening Tour" in the community. NWPL is a treasure and it is a treasure to be shared with our whole community. NWPL library staff is uniquely positioned to help sustain and support Woodstock.

If I haven't answered your email or phone call this week it's because I'm deeply immersed in learning all about the transformational power of public libraries! I will be back next week and look forward to seeing you in the library or around town soon.

Summer in the Children's Room
with Melissa
It has been a very busy summer at the library in general, and in the Children's Room in particular. The annual Summer Reading challenge began mid-June and continued through the end of July. During this six-week period, 101 children, aged 5 to 14, signed up for the program, which entailed meeting a daily reading goal each week to earn prizes and free books.
For the first time, the library partnered with the Woodstock school district's Summer SOAK enrichment program. A number of instructors made it a point to bring their students to the library to participate in the Summer Reading challenge, obtain library cards and check out books. Students came from many area towns - Woodstock, Barnard, Pomfret, Killington, Reading, Brownsville, Plymouth - and, thanks to the generosity of the NWPL Board of Trustees, we were able to extend loan privileges to 35 children. In addition to supporting young readers, the Children's Room also provided books to teachers to support their instructional programs.
This year's annual Summer Reading theme was entitled "Build a Better World" and the youth library hosted a free Raptor Nesting program on July 15 that was conducted by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. Three hawks were brought on site and much was learned about raptor breeding, nesting and fledging. In addition to the live raptors, skulls, claws and wings were also on display. . . .     (read more...)

Classics Book Discussion: The Idiot
by Fyodor Dostoevsky

The Idiot  is considered one of Dostoevskty's greatest works, although not as popular as Crime and Punishment or the Brothers Karamazov. It is said to be his most autobiographical work --Dostoevsky, like his hero, was an epileptic. The book was written in 1867-69 while he was abroad after fleeing from his creditors in Russia.
The title is an ironic reference to the hero, Prince Myshkin, whose goodness and simplicity lead some people to think he is stupid. Myshkin is sort of a Russian Christ figure, who embodies the values Dostoevsky cherished - altruism, meekness, kindness and love.
