Greetings! Happy June! It has been lovely getting outside into the yard and getting a bit of a garden planted.
May was a busy month at SLA as I am sure it was across the province. SLA hosted their second virtually delivered AGM and I thank all those who attended for your engaged participation. We had a great discussion about the Indigenous student bursary that was presented to the membership in response to the Resolution at the 2020 AGM. We had such a great discussion and it was decided this would go back to the committee for some fine-tuning before getting approved by the Board for next steps. The Continuing Education committee met on May 25 and had a great meeting to discuss all the points raised at the AGM. I believe we have an even stronger bursary for all this consultation and work. We will take it to the Board for approval and will start work on the implementation. Consultation and discussion will continue through the upcoming year and I am so excited for the process and the end result.

Of course, SLA staff and some very hard-working volunteers are working on the upcoming MLA-SLA joint conference. This has been a rewarding new challenge for us. First, we are working with MLA, which has been so fun and interesting, but so different from our normal planning process. And, second, we are putting together a fully virtually delivered conference. I hope you have all taken a look at the program and have registered for the conference. I am looking forward to Photo Credit
“seeing” you there. Andrew Marshall

Recognition and Gratitude to Committee Volunteers
SLA thanks all of the volunteer Committee Members for their dedication over the past year. It was a complicated year to engage volunteers and it is important to acknowledge that much of SLA’s work is supported and advanced through a volunteer committee structure. Our gratitude is extended to the Chairs and members of internal SLA committees as well as to SLA members who serve on external committees.
Through external committee work you bring the voice of the Saskatchewan Library Association and extend our ability to contribute and influence.
Stay tuned for a call out for Committee Volunteers in 2021-22

TD Summer Reading Club
The winners of the Library Awards have been selected and notified.
The Library Awards will be presented at two events:
-
English category recipients will receive their awards on June 15, 2021, at the virtual Manitoba–Saskatchewan Libraries Conference
-
French category recipients will receive their awards on June 10, 2021, as part of the virtual Rendez-vous des bibliothèques publiques du Québec
- The Club sponsors, The TD Bank, Library and Archives Canada and Toronto Public Library are proud sponsors of the virtual Manitoba-Saskatchewan Libraries Conference and we thank them for their contribution.
The Children’s Storytelling and Performer Tour will be a bit different this year. As Many library regions will not be hosting in person events, SLA is creating four videos from Saskatchewan performers including Pat Roth (balloon sculptures), Danica Lorer (storytelling) Danny Kazam (Magic) and Simon Moccasin (Indigenous Storytelling). These videos will be recorded and distributed to the regional coordinators by July 1st.
Watch for more information soon. The Children’s Storytelling and Performer Tour is supported annually by SaskTel.
Culture Days, September 24 to October 24, 2021, is virtual again in 2021 and will also overlap with Saskatchewan Library Week, October 17-24.
We are thrilled to announce the theme for Saskatchewan Library Week:
Saskatchewan Libraries: Rising Above.
SLA will commission six writers and artists to create short workshops, readings and presentations on a variety of topics. Some will be hands on, while others will introduce new and engaging topics for further exploration. Libraries will be able to share the videos with their patrons in their physical space if they are open, or through their website and social media pages.
The Call for Artists is here.
Please circulate as widely as possible. The Program Committee will adjudicate the applications.
The Book Spine Poetry Contest will run from September 7 - November 1st. Your patron participation is always welcome.
One Book, One Province Saskatchewan
The OBOP Committee will announce the selected title soon. Stay tuned.

Estevan Public Library Programming
with Jess Kelly, Adult Program Coordinator
Are your programs all free of charge?
Yes! All of our programs are free.
Do you provide supplies for participants?
For our Take and Make kits, we supply unique items people may not have at home, like yarn, paint or beads. We also send an instruction list with tools participants will need to help make the project, like pencils or scissors. With our virtual cooking programs, like Kids Cooking and A-Z World Foods, we don’t provide supplies since it’s challenging to keep produce fresh for more than a few days. We do always supply a list of ingredients and substations along with the videos though. Once we are back to in-person programming, we’ll be able to provide the supplies and the tools.

|
Bengough Public Library Programming
with Fay Adam, Branch Librarian
How do you get word out about your programming?
We use social media, calendars, poster in branch as well as posters around town.
Did you offer this kind of vibrant programming pre-Covid, or has programming expanded over the past year?
We have always offered programing free of charge and provided supplies. We are doing more virtual classes now than before and we are now offering take and make craft kits.
What are your most popular programs?
Usually, children’s programs are our most popular, but currently more teens and adults are taking part.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
