Education for Ministry, Zoom Style
Many churches have gone online for their services and other ministries, including parish Education for Ministry meetings. Included in treading into online meetings for their EfM group is St. Augustine's in Augusta. Led by  Deacon John Warner and Michael Gaynor,  Rector of St. Augustine's, the Rev. Jim Said stated,  " The y Zoomed into  the  future while learning scripture  from   the  past!"

Top Ten Reasons to Join EfM! (According to the EfM group at St. Augustine's)
10. When it comes to your faith, do you have more questions than answers?
9. Do you enjoy spirited discussion and sharing of yourself?
8. Do  the stories of war, greed, failure, redemption, and love in  the Old Testament excite you?
7. Do you like to be mentally challenged?
6. Do you enjoy breaking bread and sharing fellowship on a regular basis?
5. When it comes to  theologians, do you find yourself wondering what  they were thinking and what planet  they were  from?
4. Do you ever read a passage in  the Bible, scratch your head, and say, "Huh?"
3. Do you have a hunger for expanding your spiritual life?
2. Does Paul confound, amaze, and frustrate you?
1. Do you sometimes wrestle with God, but have yet to win an argument? (God may win  the arguments, but you'll become a better wrestler!)

If you answered "yes" to any of  these,  then EfM may be for you!
In  the Christian faith, all baptized people are called to be ministers to one another and to  the wider world. Education for Ministry is a comprehensive program of study, prayer, and  theological reflection to prepare laypersons for ministry in  the world and in  the church.

The EfM group from St. Augustine's use Zoom for their last meeting of the program year.

EFM meets weekly during  the  academic year (September through May) in small group seminars under  the  guidance of trained mentors.  The  four-year course of study, designed by  the  School of  The ology at  the  University of  the  South (Sewanee) encompasses Old and New Testament, church history,  the ology and ethics, and liturgy. Bread of Life at St. Francis
The Rev. Beverly Braine with the loaves.
On Sunday, May 17th, over the course of the morning, members of the St. Francis of the Islands Church were invited by their Priest in Charge, Beverly Braine, to pay a visit to their Sid Daniel patio outside the parish house to receive a hand-made loaf of bread.

I am the bread of life, they who come to me shall not hunger were the words printed on the invitation that each family unit in the parish received. The bread was baked by Charlotte Dixon, owner/operator of Charlotte's Confections on Wilmington Island. Charlotte is a member of St. Francis.

As an individual loaf was presented to each person or family who arrived, Bev said to them, "We who are many are one, because we share one bread." It was Beverly's hope that in the breaking these loaves in their own homes, parishioners could feel connected to each other, and to the Bread of Life, which is Christ.
A Call for Support
Submitted by J im and Haydee Toedtman on behalf of the Dominican Development Group

We're being called on to help our brothers and sisters in the Dominican Republic. The diocese of the Dominican Republic and of Georgia have been companion diocese for nearly 20 years. In that time, parishioners from our churches throughout Georgia have helped build churches, schools, health clinics, nurseries and adult homes, taught classes, led Vacation Bible School, sung and prayed together and embraced each other. It is a vibrant community devoted to Christ with vital and inspiring leadership in Bishop Moises Quezada Mota.

Bishop Quezada had planned to spend this week travelling to Savannah to join the festivities honoring the transfer of leadership to Bishop Frank Logue. Instead, he is tending to the desperate needs of his country and asking our help.

Facing the coronavirus epidemic,  the Dominican Republic has been locked down since early March. The recorded incidence of Covid-19 and the death rate are comparable to U.S. figures. The real impact is more severe. The problem is acute in the capital and in the northern part of the country. No flights are arriving at the Santo Domingo Airport. Hospitals are swamped.

In response, the Bishop is now beginning an appeal to support the work of the Episcopal Church's network of 45 churches, 22 schools, two clinics and two nursing homes that operate throughout the country. To learn more of the appeal, coordinated by the Dominican Development Group, click here.
