Worship with us this Sunday!

Our scripture passages are Psalm 23 (reassurance of God’s constant care and presence), Psalm 88 (prayer for help in despondency) and Luke 8:26-39 (Jesus interacting with a man who has demons and is separate from family and society.) We just came through Mental Health Awareness Month. What does our faith and our church tell us about mental health?
It’s a Communion Sunday, so prepare a simple sacred meal for yourself - bread/crackers and juice/wine/water.

Reminder: We will worship in person next Sunday, June 13 out back at church and then have our Congregational Meeting immediately following. We will also be sharing updates from our Covid Team and Church Council about this Transition Time.

The Power of Yes

Two weeks after our last dose of vaccine, I wondered what would happen after the year of no ended. I talked with the Sweet Bakers Group and asked if we followed the PUCC Covid Team Protocols, we could have permission to return to the church kitchen. We checked with them, and they approved if we all were vaccinated and would wear masks. We agreed to both rules.

I called the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, who we had baked cakes and brownies for more than seven years, and they were still closed and doubted they would open up their Wednesday lunches anytime soon. However, the answering message directed callers to contact Pat Penelton at Centennial Disciple of Christ on Fountain Street in North St. Louis. They provided more than 75 meals for people who came from 11:00 am to 1:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays.

When I asked if they would like eight trays cakes or brownies twice a month, she said yes, and I said yes, and off we went. The Sweet Bakers have made 24 cakes since that telephone call and plan on continuing through the summer. Harold and I delivered cakes today and stayed to help with the preparation of the hot meal. Pat decides on the menu based on donated foods and other products. Pilgrim UCC provides them financial support, as do Schnucks and other grocery stores around St. Louis.

This morning they made pork cutlets with mashed potatoes, apple slices, salad, rolls, a bottle of water, and cake. The crew there numbered nearly 20 people who at one time said "yes" to this project which has provided almost 10,000 meals since the beginning of Covid in March 2020.

So the power of yes from Sweet Bakers, PUCC Covid Team, the Lunch Team at Centennial has resulted in a beautiful experience.
