nsercNSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships

The call has been launched for self-nominations to the NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships (previously known as the Steacie Fellowships). Full details for this year's competition can be found on the NSERC Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships website and are summarized below.

Please share this information with eligible early career researchers in your network. A list of past winners and their research profiles can be found here.

Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships recognize early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and support them to enhance their research capacity.

Early-stage academic researchers are those who have held an independent academic position for 10 years or less as of June 1 2021 and who currently hold a grant from NSERC. A candidate submitting a nomination in June 2021 would have been hired on or after June 1 2011, adjusted for eligible delays. For eligibility information visit the website.

Fellows will receive a research grant of $250,000 over two years (April 2022 to March 2023), and will also be relieved from teaching and administrative duties so they can devote time and energy to research. Queen's may certify up to six nominees, and six fellowships are awarded nationally each year. Key dates are below:
  • Expression of Interest (EOI): April 26 (mandatory)
  • EOI selection: May 10
  • Full Nomination pkg (internal): May 31 (mandatory)
  • Agency deadline: June 7

Queen's University Library invites faculty members and instructors to get involved in the development of open course materials by submitting proposals for the 2021 Call for Proposals: Open Education Resources. Open Education Resources (OER) are freely accessible, openly licensed learning materials that can be adapted or re-used depending on instructor requirements. They increase the affordability of education for students and provide greater flexibility for instructors.

Two funding streams are available in 2021:
  • Adapt an Open Education Resource ($2,500 available for each project)
  • Create an Open Education Resource ($7,500 available for each project)
The deadline has been extended until May 14, 2021.

contagionContagion Cultures lecture series

In March 2020, Queen's University entered unknown territory as we, along with every other institution of higher ed in the country, went completely remote.  The intervening year saw our students, staff, and faculty rise to the occasion and succeed - but not without learning difficult lessons along the way. Barbara Crow, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science, and Warren Mabee, Director, Associate Dean, School of Policy Studies, discuss these experiences and draw out some lessons learned as the COVID-19 pandemic enters its second year.

extenuatingReminder - Extenuating circumstances and incident reports during exams

If a student experiences some kind of emergency or extenuating circumstance that prevents them from being able to complete an exam, they must report to the e-proctor before exiting the exam and an exam incident report will be sent to the Faculty Office and the instructor. The Associate Dean (Academic) and instructor will consult to determine if the exam attempt is valid or invalid. See Academic Regulation 8.4 for details concerning extenuating circumstances and exams.

If an incident or breach of exam hall regulations occur during an exam, an exam incident report will be sent to the Faculty Office and the instructor. If any incident or breach appears to be a potential departure from academic integrity we encourage instructors to initiate an academic integrity investigation. See the instructor guidelines and forms.

Any questions about exams, regulations or academic integrity can be directed to [email protected].
