MOTHER'S DAY

Flower Donations Needed

This year, the annual Mother’s Day flower planting will be done differently. Because there are not currently a lot of children attending Mass, and we continue to be cautious about safety, the flowers will be planted by some of our Year 1 Confirmation students on Mother’s Day, May 9.

What has not changed is our need for donations of flowers. Any quantity of any type of Marigold is welcome. Anyone can donate a few or as much as a flat of Marigolds by bringing them to the South patio (back door) on Saturday, May 8 or before 9:00 Mass on Sunday, May 9.

If you would like to donate but are not available for those drop-off times, please contact Dez Sobiech.
PRAYER FOR RACIAL JUSTICE

Prayer from Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales for Racial Justice Sunday 2021:

Father, you created each one of us in your own image.
Yet yours is a world made glorious by its rich diversity.
This we sometimes misunderstand, sometimes fear.

Give us the patience to build on what unites us,
to celebrate our differences and to learn from them.

Grant us the wisdom to recognize your Church, beyond the walls of a building, reaching out across all communities, countries and cultures.

Give us the courage to offer refuge to those in need,
to challenge prejudice and seek justice for all.

Help us see that you created us in your image.
Neighbor or stranger, always our brother or sister.
Amen.

All Aboard for VBS 2021

The Rocky Railway will be rolling July 12-15 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm each day.

  • We will limit total campers at VBS to 35 participants
  • We will limit small groups to 7 campers and 2 leaders
  • Each small group will remain in their own “pod” as they move through the day
  • We will follow whatever CDC guidelines are in place in July
  • Snacks will be prepackaged and eaten only with small groups
  • Fee: $30 per child.

VBS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

St. Thomas Becket is gearing up for VBS. We are rolling into the station July 12-15 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

To have a successful experience for all, we desperately need adult or experienced high school students to help in a few areas:

  • If you love photography we have a great spot for you! In Spotlight VBS you photograph the kids for a slideshow. There’s even a script outlining the specific shots you need.

  • Have you gotten really good at watching TV these last few months? In KidVid, you show a video and then discuss it with questions provided!

  • Do you love science and cool gizmos? In Imagination Station, you spark imagination through science and at the same time connect it to Scripture.

  • Prefer to be more active? LocoMotion Games is the place for you. Play games that connect with the daily Bible Point.

  • Love music and dance? In Sing & Play Express, you can teach the crews fun dance moves that are provided or make up your own!

  • Are you theatrical? With an easy to follow script, Bible Adventures gives you a chance to show your dramatic side.

  • We also need a few more crew leaders and would welcome middle schoolers who will be entering 6th grade this fall as additional helpers.

To proceed with plans for VBS, we need these spots filled ASAP.

COUNCIL SPOTLIGHT
MAY 6

SAVE THE DATE

May 6, 2021 beginning at 6:00 pm will be your opportunity to learn about the Councils that make up the leadership of this community. There are openings in 5 of the 6 councils and this is the evening to find out if one of them is right for you. We will be spotlighting the different councils each week until May 6. This week we begin with Life Stages Spirituality and Parish Engagement. If you have any questions please contact Kevin Magyar at kevinm@stbeagan.org.

LIFE STAGES SPIRITUALITY COUNCIL

Council Vision:
We, the Catholic Community of St. Thomas Becket, believe that God is found in everyday life, and that faith and life are inseparable. We aspire to nurture people at all Life Stages, support the development of the whole person and foster a call to prayer and Christian service. In addition to faith-centered, classroom learning, we will create innovative opportunities for online learning, mentoring, outreach and the discovery of each person’s God given gifts. Our Life Stages:

  • Early Childhood
  • School Age
  • Adolescence/Teens
  • Young Adult
  • Adulthood
  • Middle Age
  • Mature Adult

A Life Stages Spirituality council member would be asked to:
  • Provide insight into the challenges and needs of a particular life stage – communicate what’s needed
  • Provide feedback and direction into the types, times, frequency & platform of programming appealing to a particular life stage – communicate the best way to fulfill needs
  • Assist prioritization of needs and interests across all life stages – help juggle the needs of all

Our Invitation:
We are looking for men, women and teens who can represent the needs of their life stage on our quest to become the people God created us to be.

PARISHIONER ENGAGEMENT COUNCIL

The Parish Engagement Council helps parishioners use their unique God-given talents to the benefit of others, within our walls and beyond. From welcoming new members, to helping connect parishioners with the multitude of ministry opportunities available, to celebrating our successes, the Engagement Council strives to assist all who seek to love, to serve and to be hope.

We are always looking for new faces with fresh perspectives to join our small but active and energetic team. We assist all STB ministries by building systems and creating tools to connect people and their gifts with ministry opportunities. We recognize and celebrate our differences. Differences in the talents we've been given, the things that excite and motivate us, the choices of how we spend our time, and how much time we have to share. We also recognize we are better together and when we grow and share our talents and gifts.

The Parishioner Engagement Council exists to
help you find your place at St. Thomas Becket and in our community.

AN INVITATION TO LEARN MORE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND/OR HOW TO BECOME CATHOLIC

Do you have questions about the Church after worshiping with us online?

  • Wondering about the role of God in your life, about Jesus, Pope Francis, the Catholic Church today?
  • Wanting to know more about the Catholic faith of someone you love?
  • Thinking about being baptized? Already baptized but want to find out about becoming Catholic?
  • Do you have a child seven years old or older who isn’t baptized? Do you have a young person baptized in another tradition but seeking 1st Eucharist and Confirmation in the Catholic Church?
  • Did you never complete your initiation into the church? Did you miss 1st Eucharist or Confirmation?
  • Are you or a friend or loved one looking for a faith community which can nurture growth in faith?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which people ages 7 to 107 become Catholic Christians. But before making this decision we spend time exploring our own faith and the faith of this community. Then the process is tailored to the needs and background of the person.

GOSPEL MEDITATION

We often act out of ignorance. Armed with the best of intentions, we think we are seeing clearly and correctly, but we are not. We don’t always understand the full meaning of things and only perceive part of the truth. Hence, our judgments and actions can be impaired by myopic, incomplete or erroneous perceptions. The meaning of life, understanding of human experience, and negotiating life’s challenges can all become skewed without proper understanding and vision. The resurrection of Christ is the corrective to our incomplete and limited view of life. Looking at things with the eyes of faith brings a depth of clarity and understanding to how we see God, ourselves, others, and the world.

Even the disciples struggled with their limited understanding and ignorant perceptions. It was only when Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures that their eyes were opened. It was their “aha” moment when everything clicked. We all want the substance of our lives to come together, make sense, and have meaning. This is easier to achieve when things are going positively, and life is good. It is when suffering, disappointment, death, hardship, and injustice enter the picture that things can become unsettled and disoriented. Our faith in the goodness and love of God is tested. We tend to shift our focus on these difficult and challenging moments and do not see them within the greater picture of how God intends life to unfold. We can gain, from the passion and resurrection of Christ, the clear vision we need in order to move away from ignorance to enlightenment.

We need our “aha” moment when everything comes together and clicks. It can come in a fleeting instant when we feel totally connected with God, where we find ourselves, others and all of creation. It is a moment when all is right and good, regardless of how difficult our journey. Our “aha” moment assures us that God is here, right with us, in us and around us bringing us a gift and blessing we can receive nowhere else: peace. In those brief sacramental encounters when we are lifted up out of ourselves and centered, we can hear God say, “peace be with you,” and we feel secure. It’s all okay. The resurrected Christ has the power to bring this gift to us. Some people, as they are facing their deaths, remark about this peace. When looking into the window of eternity, they experience a depth of joy and are amazed at God’s goodness and closeness. We are called to be witnesses to this Good News.

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

How to Fail Your Way to Heaven

You know what are some of my favorite moments in Scripture? The little “Easter eggs” of Jesus’ humanity, things like Jesus falling asleep, Jesus drawing in the sand, Jesus playing with kids. And how about Jesus rising from the dead, appearing to his disciples and saying, “So, have you got anything to eat?”

It’s right for us to always keep in mind that Jesus is God. But we also have to remember that he was man. He got hungry. He cried when he felt sad and laughed when he felt happy. He got tired. He got bored.

Because he was God, none of those feelings ever led him into sin, like they do us. He never spent a car ride trying to pass the hours by seeing how annoyed he could make his older sister. He never smacked Peter over the head for saying something really stupid. But he did unleash some Biblically righteous anger on those traders in the temple, didn’t he? And he wasn’t shy about calling Peter “a Satan” when his friend tempted him to take the easy way out.

It’s the tightrope walk we all try to balance every day, honoring our human emotions while still answering God’s call to be better. Being perfect isn’t the domain of the Christian — that’s the domain of Christ only. Trying and failing, then trying again (and failing again) and again and again? That’s the domain of the Christian.
