Spring Musical...Wizard of Oz!

Due to the snow, auditions for The Wizard of Oz will now be taking place on Tuesday, January 25th, and Wednesday, January 26th after school in the Drama room from 3:15 pm to 4:30 pm in 10-minute blocks. If we have enough sign-ups to warrant it, we may extend the times later, but the days will remain the same. Rehearsals will now be starting the week of March 7th, still on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. All other details of our previous announcement are the same. Thank you so much for being flexible and please reach out to Ms. Colleen ([email protected]) or Mrs. Saunders ([email protected]) if you have any questions!

Join Us for Peabody Partners in Action!

Join volunteers throughout our area in commemorating the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by working to make our community stronger and more equitable. Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. You can visit the Charlottesville United Way's VolunteerCville page here to find opportunities for you and your kids to get involved this weekend.

January 28: Music Together
Families are invited to come to enjoy the music of Acelia @ The Front Porch Roots Music School, 221 Water Street, 7:00-9:00 PM

January 29: Hiking Club
Peabody’s new Hiking Club, led by Peabody parent and environmental scientist Nicola McGoff, will have their first outing on January 29th. An enterprise for fairly hardy hikers, the first hike will circumnavigate the 7-mile perimeter of the Ragged Mountain Reservoir. The group will meet in the upper Ragged Mountain parking lot at 10:00 AM, and expects to complete the hike in about two hours. There is no age limit to participate, but any prospective participant under 8 years old should probably have hiking experience. If you plan to join, please RSVP to Nicola at [email protected] by 9:00 AM on the 28th. Group will meet every last Saturday morning of each month.

February 5: Our Friends of the Earth will meet at Rivanna River Company at 3:00 PM Saturday to clean up the riverbanks and enjoy some hot apple cider together afterward. Please BRING YOUR OWN DRINKING VESSELS if you’ll want to share some cider.
GSA

Starting next Friday, January 21st, Peabody School will offer an optional affinity and advocacy group opportunity for 7th and 8th-grade students called the Gender & Sexuality Alliance, or GSA, formerly known in schools as the Gay-Straight Alliance. In consultation with local organization Side by Side, the GSA student group will be facilitated by School Counselor Ann Tolley Jones and TA Mykel Paige, with occasional support from other Peabody faculty. The group will meet once a week during lunch every other Friday. Peabody’s GSA will include 6th-grade students starting in mid-February.

We hope to provide a safe space for students to build community and to advocate for issues important to their identities and their work as allies. If you have any questions about this student group opportunity, please contact Ms. Jones!
Annual Fund

Thank you to everyone who has participated thus far! We have 100% Board and Staff Participation!

It is not too late to participate in the Annual Fund! Your participation in the Peabody Annual Fund provides essential operating support to Peabody. Income from tuition does not cover all of our operating expenses. The generosity of our community supports almost everything that keeps Peabody running, from salaries and classroom technology to arts and supplies. Lastly, the Fund supports financial aid as we ensure that any student can share in the Peabody experience. We hope that you will support Peabody in this area and that you will keep in mind that your Annual Fund gift, of any size, really matters to the school. Let's all MAKE AN IMPACT!

Thank you in advance for your consideration of a gift to Peabody School for the 2021-22 year and for being such strong supporters of our wonderful school! Please remember to keep us in your plans for the end of tax year giving.
Student-led Bake Sale to Support Team Seas

A group of 5th-grade students will sponsor a bake sale next Friday, January 21st. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the bake sale will be delivery-based, so be on the lookout for a bake sale order form early next week. They will come to each classroom and deliver the treats in the morning. All of the money will be donated to the charity, Team Seas, a charity that is striving to clean up the trash in our waterways. They already reached their goal as a foundation but they still need our help! Every dollar donated is a pound of trash out of the water.  So not only do you get a delicious treat, but you get to help our seas!
2022-23 Financial Aid

Returning families must notify Rob Orlando via email of their intent to apply for financial aid for the next academic year. Please send this notification directly to [email protected] by TODAY. Thank you!
Sustainability Blip of the Week: Carbon Cycle

To support our Peabody sustainability mission, our Earth Action Teams want to educate our community on the many ways you can help the environment. There will be a weekly feature in the newsletter that will educate you about a topic and give you ways you can take action!

What is the Carbon Cycle?
The carbon cycle describes the process of how carbon atoms travel continuously from the atmosphere to the earth and back. The image next to this shows how carbon moves through the cycle and enters back into the atmosphere by carbon emissions from fossil fuels, organisms dying, decayed organisms, and more.

What is your Carbon Footprint?
Your carbon footprint is how much carbon you emit due to the consumption of fossil fuels.
You can learn about your carbon footprint at the link below.

Interesting Facts:
Carbon is the fourth most common element in the entire universe
Carbon is also the second most common in the human body.
The atomic weight of carbon is 12.0107.
The current concentration of carbon dioxide gas in our atmosphere is about 420 ppm, a 50% increase from the concentration at the beginning of the industrial revolution.
Carbon is a non-metal element. It is a pattern maker. It can bond with itself and other elements as well.

Helpful Tips About How Can You Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
There are several different ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. Try to eat local and seasonal- no strawberries in the winter! You can limit your consumption of meat. Try to bike, walk, carpool, or take public transportation, though this is harder in covid. Turn the water off in between dishes and while brushing your teeth. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Turn the temperature down one degree in the winter and up one degree in the summer.

Challenge of the Week:
Find out your carbon footprint and try to reduce it! Use the helpful tips above for inspiration!
Try to not waste anything! Reuse, Reduce, or Recycle! Just turning off the lights when you leave a room helps.

How does the Carbon Cycle affect Climate Change?
The carbon cycle contributes directly to climate change because the CO2 starts in the atmosphere or by burning fossil fuels in the atmosphere and is then absorbed by plants, animals, and the ocean. The earth’s greenhouse effect is 20% caused by carbon.
