IN THE CLASSROOM: ACADEMIC NEWS
Interactive Science at Its Best
Just before Christmas break, the Environmental Science class received 200 rainbow trout fish eggs from the Maine Inland Fish and Wildlife State Hatchery in New Gloucester. Since then, the class has been hard at work making habitats for the growing rainbow trout.

The students are starting to build their aquaponics systems, designing their systems in groups using materials already available, along with new materials. Once the systems are built, the class will begin planting crops.

Thank you to the Parent Support Organization for supporting our students through the purchase of three 75 gallon aquarium tanks and the equipment to run them! And thank you to teacher, Jessie Scannell, for your hands-on approach to environmental science!
Clothes for a Cause
The CVA Environmental Club hosted their first ever thrift store. Students and staff were encouraged to donate used clothes, and purchase like-new ones from the pop-up thrift store on campus.

All proceeds from the sale benefited the Environmental Club. All items not sold were donated to local charities, to help area families stay warm this winter.
The Environmental Club is on Instagram
The Environmental Science students at CVA have set up some wildlife cameras around campus that they're using as an interactive learning tool to survey, and take note, of changes in the local environment's flora and fauna. If you're a nature nut, or just like to see the cute critters in our backyard, check out their new instagram account @cvawildlifecameras.

Promoting Diversity in Snow Sports
February is Black History Month. The most recent data from the National Ski Area Association reports that 88 percent of skiers are white. CVA recognizes the lack of diversity in snow sports and is committed to the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Check out this short video from REI presenting the Brotherhood of Skiing. Since 1973, the National Brotherhood of Skiers has been dedicated to creating a welcoming space for people of color on the slopes and supporting black youth in snow sports. The National Brotherhood of Skiers hosts the largest gathering of black skiers in the United States and represents 53 ski clubs with over 3,000 members across the country.
